The program starts Sept. 1 and runs for 12 weeks through Nov. 17. Adults ages 21 and older who work or live in Edina can register for the course to get a firsthand look at how the Edina Police Department operates. Classes are held Thursday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., or South Metro Public Safety Training Facility, 7525 Braemar Blvd. “The Edina Citizens’ Academy allows residents and local businesspeople to get an inside look at what Edina Police Officers do on a daily basis, including traffic stops, investigations and administration, as well as use-of-force incidents and training,” said Officer Mike Sussman, who coordinates the program. “Participants are placed in a number of situations that allow them to go through the decision-making processes officers face so they get a better understanding of the challenges.” Among other things, participants will be part of mock traffic stops, tour the Hennepin County Jail, meet one of the Edina Police K-9 teams, learn about the Metro Area Drug Task Force, learn proactive defense tactics, get a close look at Edina’s SWAT team and follow the course of a criminal investigation. About 170 students have graduated since the City began offering the program in 2010. Citizens’ Academy is sponsored by the Edina Crime Prevention Fund. Cost is $25.
