This year’s theme is “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan Your Escape.” During Fire Prevention Week and throughout the month of October, Edina Fire staff visit area schools to provide public education to children, adults and teachers to learn how to stay safe in the event of a fire.” Edina residents are encouraged to take action to protect themselves and their families from fire. Four easy steps include: Check your smoke alarms. Make sure you have an adequate number of working smoke alarms and check them monthly. Create a fire escape plan. Today’s fires burn hotter and faster than ever. Residents may have as little as two minutes to escape a home fire from the time that the smoke alarm sounds. Practice your fire escape plan. It’s important that families know how to execute the plan they’ve created. You should practice your escape plan at least every six months. Talk to kids about fire safety. Make sure they know what to do in a fire and how to prevent fires from happening. Edina residents can also enter a fire escape plan competition! Residents who take a photo or video of their household practicing their home escape plan, post it to social media and tag @EdinaMN will be entered into a drawing for a gift card. “Fire prevention is always our top priority. Please help us keep your family safe by planning your escape today,” said Fire Marshal Dave Ehmiller. For more information on fire alarms and home escape plans, visit bit.ly/3BTfMoh.
