Climate Change Event To Be Held April 18
Edina, Minn., March 28, 2013 – Major meteorological events, such as October 2012’s Superstorm Sandy
that devastated parts of New England, have more people wondering about climate change. What is science
telling us about the increasing intensity and frequency of such events? The City of Edina’s Energy & Environment
Commission hopes to explore those questions with its “What’s Up With The Weather?” presentation 7-8:30
p.m. Thursday, April 18. The event will begin with a resource fair at 6 p.m. at Edina High School’s Fick
Auditorium.
Meteorologist and Entrepreneur Paul Douglas and J. Drake Hamilton, Science Policy Director for Fresh Energy,
will explain what “normal weather” is and what science is telling us and show the fingerprints of climate change.
“I will be explaining my journey,” Douglas said, “as a skeptic in the ‘80s to acknowledging the science in the ‘90s,
not based on any movies, but based on the science. It was the weather that really got my attention. Just the
frequency and intensity of extremes in Minnesota and across the nation that made me question whether
something had shifted or changed.”
“Attendees will walk away with a broader understanding of what science is telling us about climate change and
what they can do to help reduce their carbon footprint,” said City of Edina Environmental Engineer Ross
Bintner. “There are many things we can do that can help make a difference.”
In addition to hearing from qualified speakers, residents are encouraged to attend the resource fair preceding
the dialogue. Xcel Energy, CenterPoint Energy and the Center for Energy and Environment will have information
on reducing energy consumption and saving money. The Energy & Environment Commission will have
information on its sustainability efforts. Attendees can also enter to win a free enhanced visit from the Home
Energy Squad.
