City to Celebrate Arbor Day with Tree Planting
Edina, Minn., April 5, 2013 – To commemorate Arbor Day, the City of Edina will plant three evergreen
trees at Garden Park, 5520 Hansen Road, on Friday, April 26.
The public is invited to help or observe the tree plantings at 10 a.m. City Forester Tom Horwath will be
available to respond to any questions or comments regarding tree care practices or discuss any issues relating
to the operations of the City’s tree program. If weather or other conditions arise that would cause a
cancellation of the event, it will be held May 3.
The evergreens, which will be planted on the north side of the playground, will expand the tree canopy cover
within the City. Edina is currently home to more than 30,000 trees that line the streets and more than 600
acres of naturally wooded areas. Horwath says trees provide us not only aesthetic benefits, but also necessary
environmental functions and are an important resource.
“I’d like to encourage all residents to find space on their property to plant a tree,” said Horwath, “so we can
continue to reap the benefits of trees well into the future.”
Horwath says April and May are an excellent time to plant trees, while the temperature is still cool enough
not to deprive the roots of water.
