As part of the Earth Day celebration, the EEC encourages residents to commit to learning more about the environment and how to help protect it by taking action. An Earth Day proclamation was read by Mayor Jim Hovland at the April 2 City Council meeting. The EEC recommends residents celebrate locally with the following:  Save energy, money and the environment by taking the Edina Energy Challenge and scheduling a visit by the Home Energy Squad.  Sign up for Windsource through Xcel Energy to reduce greenhouse gases by supporting renewable energy.  Reduce, reuse, recycle. Replace disposable plastic bottles with a reusable water bottle.  Plant trees. Grow your own vegetables.  Drive less by combining trips, walking and biking. Cut exhaust emissions by reducing engine idling.  Use organic fertilizers. Mulch grass clippings.  Turn off lights and electronics when not in use. Adjust your thermostat; turn it warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. Install CFL light bulbs and buy Energy Star appliances.  Shop for produce at the Centennial Lakes Farmers Market from 3-7 p.m. Thursdays June 12-Sept. 25.  Be a water-smart consumer. Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators. Follow best practices in watering and mowing lawns.  Attend the Edina Dialogue “What's Up With Weather? Our Changing Climate and What We Can Do About It” event, featuring meteorologist Paul Douglas and J. Drake Hamilton of Fresh Energy. The event will be held 7-8:30 p.m. April 18 at the Edina High School Fick Auditorium.
