Vehicles such as fire trucks and police cars ensure everyone’s safety while utility vehicles like garbage trucks and snowplows keep our community clean and looking great. However, the public rarely gets a chance to see these vehicles up close and personal. Now is your chance! On Saturday, May 4, area families are invited to attend the second-annual “Vehicle Day - Wheels Around Town” outside Southdale Center. The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot outside of the Herberger’s at Southdale Center. The event is co-sponsored by the cities of Edina, Richfield and Bloomington, in cooperation with Simon Malls’ Kidgits Club. Drivers will be on hand to ensure safety and to answer any questions about their jobs and the vehicles. All ages are welcome, but children must have an adult with them. The event is free of charge. Various vehicles will be on display, including a ladder truck from the Richfield Fire Department, an ambulance from the Edina Fire Department, a Holiday Station Tanker truck, a Bearcat and police sedan from the Edina Police Department, Edina Public School buses and vintage buses from the Richfield Bus Company. Richfield, Bloomington and Edina will also bring garbage trucks and utility and park maintenance vehicles and there will also be a limousine and Hennepin County Sheriff vehicles. There will also be a backhoe simulator provided by local chapter 49 of the Union of Operating Engineers to give kids a taste of construction work. While supplies last the Edina Garden Club as part of the Edina Parks and Recreation Department is offering kids the choice of seeds to plant in a small pot including beans, pumpkins and gourds as well as marigolds and impatiens. Potted flowers will make a great mother’s day gift! Edina Reads will also distribute bookmarks featuring vehicle books.
