Hovland presents Mayor’s Commendations
Edina, Minn., May 7, 2013 – Edina Mayor Jim Hovland recognized some of the top community volunteers for
the past year at the City’s annual Volunteer Recognition Reception April 30.
Hovland presented six Mayor’s Commendations. The Mayor’s Service Club Commendation was presented to
the 50th & France Business & Professional Association for community events such as Pumpkin Festival and the
community tree-lighting ceremony. E.J. Anderson received the Mayor’s Individual Service Commendation for his
work to raise money for and build the Hornets Nest at Braemar Arena. Fairview Southdale Hospital volunteer
Mel Hoiseth was presented the Mayor’s Outstanding Senior Commendation. Young filmmaker Alec Fischer
received the Mayor’s Youth Commendation and Paul and Wendy Arneberg of the Jugheads Youth Juggling
Company received the Mayor’s Connecting With Kids Commendation. Fire Chief Marty Scheerer received the
Mayor’s Community Involvement Commendation, presented annually to a City employee for volunteer service
above and beyond his or her position with the City.
Many service organizations also recognized their own exemplary volunteers at the reception. Awards were
presented to: Bill McCabe, Edina Art Center; Meg Chiodo, Edina Chamber of Commerce; Jody Kern, Edina Channel
16; Mary and Tom Lavelle, Edina Community Foundation; Aileen Foley, Energy & Environment Commission; Carolyn
Schroeder, Edina Federated Women’s Club; Liz Genovese, Edina Garden Council; Ruth Valgemae, Edina Historical
Society; Alec Fischer, Human Rights & Relations Commission; Jane Slade, Edina Morningside Woman’s Club; Pat
Beaver, Public Art Committee; Kenneth Frank, Edina Public Schools Community Volunteer Program; John
Lundquist, Edina Senior Center; Gloria Peterson, Edina Woman’s Club; Dick Lang, Fairview Southdale Hospital; John
Flynn, Rotary Club of Edina; Heather Haen Anderson, Rotary Club of Edina-Morningside; Howard Berg, Southdale Y
Service Club; and Therese Hartz, Southdale YMCA.
The Volunteer Recognition Reception will be broadcast on Edina Channel 16 daily through June 2 at 7 a.m. and 3
p.m. Sundays, 10 a.m. Mondays, 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays, 7 p.m. Thursdays, 3 and 11 a.m. Fridays and 11 p.m.
Saturdays.
