The Parks & Recreation Department recently opened a second off-leash area (OLA) at Strachauer Park. Strachauer Park, located on Beard Place just north of Highway 62, is a five-acre park that features a playground, full-sized basketball court, ice hockey rink and warming house, and two soccer fields. The hockey rink was converted to an OLA, which is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The City’s other OLA at Van Valkenburg Park is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The locations of the dog parks are on the east and west sides of town, making it more convenient for pet owners. At both parks, dogs must wear an OLA collar, which can be purchased at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., or online. OLA permits are $25 for residents and $50 for non-residents. Discounts are available for multiple dogs. Dogs must be vaccinated and need to be leashed when entering and exiting the OLA. In the OLA, glass containers, smoking, female dogs in season, unauthorized motorized equipment, bicycles, or dogs that are known to be aggressive toward others are prohibited. No children under the age of 6 are allowed in the park. Children under the age of 12 must be supervised by an adult. Owners are responsible for cleanup and any damage inflicted by their dogs. Waste bag containers are located in the parks. Because dogs are allowed off leashes, “we encourage owners to carry bags along with them to help keep the parks clean,” said Susan Faus, Assistant Parks & Recreation Director. She also encourages others to help donate waste bags to help keep the park clean and safe for everyone. The two OLAs will be evaluated based on use and issues that arise. The Parks & Recreation Department may consider adding more OLAs in the future. Faus encourages those who have suggestions to contact her at sfaus@EdinaMN.gov. -30-
