Between the three stores, 534 pounds of food and $2,664 were donated to benefit Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP), a local non-profit serving low-income, senior and disabled people in Bloomington, Edina, Richfield and south Minneapolis. Each dollar collected during the drive counts as one pound of food, making this year’s total 3,198 pounds -- a 25 percent increase over 2012 and nearly double what was donated in 2011. “I was astounded when I saw the final numbers for this year’s drive. Our customers’ continued support and generosity really shows through the increase in donations this year,” said Steve Grausam, Liquor Operations Director. During the food drive, Edina Liquor staff asked each customer if they wanted to add $1 for VEAP to their purchase total. “Not everyone remembers to bring a food donation. This made it easier for our customers to help out those in need,” Grausam said. Edina Liquor – Southdale also held a community paper-shredding event in late-October, allowing anyone to shred documents for free, though food shelf donations were encouraged. Grausam said that event alone raised 391 pounds of food and $226 in cash donations while destroying more than 6,000 pounds of paper documents. “Our goal was to increase donations this year by 20 percent, getting us close to 3,000 pounds and we exceeded that,” Grausam said. “We really could not do this without our customers. Thank you to the community for its support.” Grausam is setting his sights even higher for next year’s food drive, hoping to increase donations by another 25 percent, reaching 4,000 pounds. “Edina is such great community support. I know we can surpass this goal next October,” he said. This is Edina Liquor’s sixth year participating in the food drive, which is part of a larger, statewide drive sponsored by MillerCoors and the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association.
