Fire Turns Fatal In Edina
Edina, Minn., Dec. 16, 2013 – The Edina Fire Department responded to a fire, which turned fatal Monday
afternoon.
Edina Fire was dispatched to the 6300 block of York Avenue around 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, after people in
nearby buildings and passersby made several reports of smoke and flames coming from a unit of an apartment
building’s detached garage. Crews arrived to find a car on fire inside the garage.
Crews from Edina, Bloomington, Richfield and St. Louis Park worked through the cold to extinguish the
flames to prevent it from spreading to adjacent garage units. While checking for fire extension in the garage,
the vehicle was towed out of the unit and the body of an adult male was found in the front seat of the vehicle.
“Fatalities are very difficult to deal with, especially this time of year,” said Interim Fire Chief Darrell Todd.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family of the victim.”
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, pending an investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office. The
Hennepin County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on the victim. The identity of the victim is not
known at this time.
