Last community meeting for Name Your Neighborhood project
scheduled for Sept. 12
Edina, Minn., Aug. 23, 2012 – Edina residents are invited to attend the final community meeting for the
Name Your Neighborhood project. The meeting will begin 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the Edina Senior
Center, 5280 Grandview Square.
Community members will have an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed city-wide map for
neighborhood names and boundaries. In addition, residents will hear more about the potential benefits of
neighborhood associations.
The proposed city-wide neighborhood map is the culmination of several months of work by a volunteer
committee. The committee has gathered input through a community survey, previous community meetings,
online feedback and neighborhood canvassing.
“Residents have given us great ideas throughout the process. The more ground-level information we get, the
better we feel about our recommendations,” said Hope Melton, chair of the Neighborhood Identification
Steering Committee.
The committee will continue to collect feedback through mid-October before finalizing a recommendation for
the City Council, which is expected to vote on a neighborhood map in January 2013. Once the Name Your
Neighborhood project is completed and approved by the City Council, residents will have the opportunity to
join city-recognized neighborhood associations.
According to Melton, “Neighborhood associations can serve as good information conduit between the City
and residents. The City can use the association to seek input on issues of local concern such as proposed new
development or park reconstructions. Conversely, the association can forward their concerns to specific
contact within the City.”
Forming or joining a neighborhood association will be voluntary. Neighborhood associations will serve as
vehicle for communication and collective action, but they will not replace the City’s current public input
process or inhibit the ability of residents to speak about their individual concerns.
