Edina is switching from dual-sort to single-sort recycling beginning Oct. 1. Solvei Wilmot, City of Edina Recycling Coordinator expects recycling to increase by about 20 percent with the switch to single-sort. “Single-sort is going to be great for Edina,” Wilmot said. “It’s going to make recycling really easy. All recyclables can be comingled in one container.” Allied Waste will begin dropping off new, 65-gallon carts during the last two weeks of September, including weekends, at residences to replace the older, smaller recycling bins. Allied Waste is in a seven-year contract with the City for its recycling needs. The new carts are larger and are designated as being for recyclable materials by its blue body and green lid. “While the carts may seem large, the new size will accommodate the new, bi-weekly pick-up schedule,” Wilmot said. Wilmot said residents can upgrade or downgrade the size of their recycling carts, but asks they try the 65- gallon cart for about a month first. With the addition of single-sort recycling, previously unaccepted items will now be taken and properly recycled. Plastics No. 1-7, such as plastic food containers, yogurt cups and cottage cheese containers, paper milk and juice cartons, and bagged plastic retail bags are among the newly accepted items. Allied Waste will send residents a pick-up calendar and a new list of acceptable materials. On collection day, carts should be set out at the curb by 7 a.m. Just like with garbage receptacles, recycling carts should be stored so they are not visible from the street within 12 hours of collection. Residents who do not wish to keep their old plastic recycling containers can drop them off before Friday, Oct. 26 in the large bin at Rosland Park, 4300 W. 66th St., or at Edina’s old Public Works building, 5146 Eden Ave. For more information, contact Wilmot at 952-826-0463. -30-
