Two residents were home at the time of the fire. They reported smelling smoke shortly before the fire detector sounded and immediately got out of the house and called 9-1-1. Both occupants escaped without injury. “Fortunately, these residents had a working smoke detector,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer. “It’s important to get out of the house as soon as you hear the smoke detector sound or smell smoke. Do not stop to grab anything because fire spreads rapidly. Call 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s home.” The fire originated in a bedroom on the second level of the home, which caused significant damage to the interior of the room. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the bedroom; however, smoke and soot caused damage throughout the second floor. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but could have possibly started from an electrical appliance. The Edina Fire Department received mutual aid from Eden Prairie, Richfield and St. Louis Park.
