Between the three stores, 875 pounds of food and $1,693 were donated to benefit Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP), a local non-profit serving low-income, senior and disabled people in Bloomington, Edina, Richfield and south Minneapolis. Each dollar collected during the drive counts as one pound of food, making this year’s total 2,568 -- a 50 percent increase over 2011 and more than six times what was donated in 2010. Steve Grausam, Liquor Operations Director, attributes the success of the drive to Edina Liquor’s customers and staff. “Our customers’ continued support and generosity really helps those who are less fortunate,” Grausam said. “Our staff also asked each customer if they wanted to add $1 for VEAP to their bill total. Not everyone remembers to bring a food donation, so this is another good way to help a great cause.” Edina Liquor – Southdale also held a free community paper-shredding event in late October, allowing anyone to shred documents for free. Food donations were collected at the event. Grausam said that event alone raised 375 pounds of food and more than $100 in cash donations, while shredding and recycling 6,250 pounds of paper. “I am elated with this year’s results,” Grausam said. “We had set a goal for this year to increase donations by 20 percent, getting us close to 2,000 pounds and we more than doubled my expectations. We really could not do this without our customers. A big ‘thank you’ should go to the community for its support. “I am setting my sights even higher for next year. Our goal is to increase donations by another 500 pounds, putting us over 3,000 pounds. Edina is such a great city; I know we can shatter this goal, too.” This is Edina Liquor’s fifth year participating in the food drive, which is part of a larger, statewide drive sponsored by MillerCoors and the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association.
