Volunteers of all ages are welcome as there are tasks for everyone to take on. Those who volunteer are asked to meet at the pavilion at Rosland Park, 4300 W. 66th St., at 10 a.m. Friday, April 28. Park Maintenance staff will demonstrate how to properly plant a tree, then divide the volunteers into groups who will plant the other 49 trees. Prior to the event, Park Maintenance will use an auger to break up the soil at the planting spots, so no heavy digging will be required. Shovels and other equipment will be provided. Volunteers should bring gloves and wear closed-toed shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. Volunteers are asked to register in advance at EdinaMN.gov/ArborDay to help plan the needed supplies and groups. The Arbor Day event is part of Edina’s NextGen Trees effort, launched in 2022, to plant 1,000 new trees across Edina by the end of 2023. “We need everyone’s help to reach our goals to expand and diversify Edina’s tree canopy,” said City Forester Luther Overholt. To that end, Edina recently held its first public tree sale, with half of the 200 available trees selling out in 15 minutes. While all the trees are now claimed, interested residents can add themselves to the wish list for the next sale by visiting bit.ly/EdinaTreeWishlist2023 (case sensitive).
