According to City of Edina Recycling Coordinator Solvei Wilmot, unlike traditional black plastic waste bags, compostable waste containers will reduce the high level of plastic materials being sent to local composting facilities. The effects of reduced processing costs and enhanced quality of finished compost materials will expectantly result in environmentally preferable compost for yards and gardens, she said. The preferred collection containers are kraft paper bags, compostable plastic bags and carts that can be provided by the refuse hauler. Unlike standard plastic bags, compostable bags are typically clear in color. They can be purchased from most local grocery and home improvement stores. As an alternative to using compostable plastic bags or kraft paper bags, residents can drop off their waste at a compost facility or compost their own yard waste within the confines of their property. Hennepin County has compost disposal sites listed on its website at Hennepin.us.
