City to aid some residents at risk for spring flooding with
sand bags
Edina, Minn., March 15, 2011 – The City of Edina will provide sandbags to those home owners
whose homes might be in danger of flooding this spring.
A wet fall combined with significant snowfalls this winter and good potential for spring rain have
significantly increased the potential for flooding in Edina. City staff members have been meeting with
representatives of the Minnehaha Creek and Nine Mile Creek watershed districts to determine at-
risk properties.
Both watershed districts performed hydrologic modeling of the creeks and highlighted areas of
potential flooding. Many factors influence flooding, including the rate of snow melt and precipitation,
so the City encourages all owners of property near the creeks or other water bodies to assess the
risks to their land and buildings.
Based on the modeling results from the watershed districts, though, the City has identified
approximately 100 homes that could be at risk for flooding. Generally, those homes that could be at
risk include those adjacent to:
Nine Mile Creek between Brook Drive and West 70th Street
Nine Mile Creek by Creek Valley Road
Arrowhead Lake
Lake Cornelia and Garrison Ponds
Minnehaha Creek by Cascade Lane
Minnehaha Creek by 56th Street, Woodcrest Drive and Woodland Road
Minnehaha Creek by Abbott Place and Zenith Avenue
Owners of at-risk homes may request sandbags from the City, which will deliver them to their front
yards or driveways as supplies allow. The City will not place sandbags for homeowners, but can advise
as to proper placement.
Other property owners who consider their land and buildings vulnerable may pick up materials to
make their own sandbags at the old Public Works Facility, 5146 Eden Ave., between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to help Public Works crews make sandbags for the at-risk homes. Contact
