Clearing Hydrants Of Snow This Winter Can Save Lives
Edina, Minn., Dec. 7, 2011 – This winter, take the time to dig out fire hydrants on or near
your property.
During a fire, every second counts. Firefighters need hydrants to be readily available when they
arrive at a scene. Three feet all around a fire hydrant should be clear of snow and there should
be a clear path to the street from it.
“The City has about 1,900 fire hydrants,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer. “Neither the
Fire Department nor Public Works has the manpower to dig them out in a major snow event.
That’s where Edina’s residents and businesses come in.”
Scheerer said if the space around hydrants is already cleared, valuable time is not wasted on
firefighters locating and digging them out. A fire truck holding 750 gallons of water can be
depleted in fewer than four minutes.
“A hydrant can help save the lives and property of any home in a neighborhood,” Scheerer said.
“If you see a hydrant that’s buried this winter, do the neighborly thing and dig it out.”
If you are physically unable to clear a hydrant on your property, ask a neighbor to help. You
may also contact the Edina Fire Department, who may be able to assist if available.
