The market will take place rain or shine on Thursday afternoons from 3 to 7 p.m., July 1 through Sept. 30. Approximately 25 vendors will set up along the walkways of the Centrum Plaza, 7499 France Ave. S. Although products will vary weekly, patrons can expect to find items such as sweet corn, beans, potatoes, melons, strawberries, apples, pears, peppers, salsas, jams, honey, beef, pork, lamb, poultry, eggs, jerky, cheeses, breads and confections. Complimentary parking is available in any of the numerous parking lots adjacent to the Centrum. The Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP), an integral part of Minnesota’s nation-leading 2008 health reform law, strives to help Minnesotans lead longer, healthier lives by preventing the chronic disease risk factors of tobacco use and exposure, poor nutrition and physical inactivity. SHIP was a primary contributor to the opening of the Centennial Lakes Farmers Market. Increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables is a SHIP initiative. City of Edina leaders chose to do this by offering an Edina-based farmers market. This meant amending local laws to allow the sale of produce in a City park. SHIP funds were used to facilitate this process and to promote its use. SHIP staff provided professional expertise regarding why a farmers market would benefit Edina residents – particularly regarding health. Their contribution provided a key argument in favor of the farmers market and ultimately of its success.
