Past efforts to recycle materials in parks have been unsuccessful because park patrons have contaminated recyclables with trash and pet waste. Dow Water & Process Solutions recently purchased 10 new recycling containers. The containers have small round openings for bottles and cans, making it difficult to throw trash into the receptacles. The recycling containers are placed alongside trash containers. It is hoped that the new recycling containers, coupled with an increase in public education about the importance of recycling away from home, will increase the amount of recyclables collected in parks. Additional recycling containers could be purchased and the recycling program expanded into other local parks in the future. Lewis and Pamela parks were chosen for the pilot program. The parks are frequently used by the Edina Youth Soccer Association, Edina Youth Football Association, Edina Youth Hockey Association, Edina Youth Slowpitch Softball Association and Edina Youth Fastpitch Softball Association. In addition, families and individuals use the parks daily for walking, skating a recreating. Lewis Park is located at Cahill and Dewey Hill roads. Pamela Park is located at 5900 Park Place. “We are thankful of Dow Water & Process Solutions’ generous donation that will help our park users be better stewards of the environment and keep our parks clean,” said Recreation Supervisor Kristin Aarsvold. “We look forward to the opportunity to expand the program later this year.” For more information about the recycling pilot program in the parks, contact Aarsvold, 952-826-0433, or Recycling Coordinator Solvei Wilmot, 952-826-0463. -30-
