The Edina Public Art Committee awarded Minneapolis resident Perci Chester the first-place prize of $1,000 for her stainless steel, multi-piece sculpture titled Gyr Family Cycle, which denotes youth, aging and the generational presence. The piece currently resides, along with the other winning sculptures, on the Edina Promenade and can be purchased for $35,000. Fuller Cowles and Constance Mayeron of Shafer, Minn., have been awarded the second-place prize of $750 for their granite mosaic over concrete and steel chairs. The set of chairs can be purchased for $35,000. The honorable mention and $500 award went to Kathy Gustafson of Bemidji, Minn., for her Minnesota Eco Turtle crafted from welded steel. The piece can be purchased for $2,500. Quoting Pablo Picasso, Edina Public Art Committee member Lois Ring says of public art, “’Art washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life.’ I think this is so true, art takes one to a different place. I see mothers bring their children to the Promenade to enjoy the art. I see people sit and appreciate the quietness of the area in the middle of the City. Art has brought life to the beautiful parks.” The winning sculptures are part of rotating exhibitions for the Edina Promenade and Grandview Square. The exhibition will continue through spring of 2010. All art can be purchased with a tax-deductable donation to remain in the City’s public parks. The art is also available for private purchase. As a sub-committee of the Edina Art Center Board, the Edina Public Art Committee began as a way to enhance the beauty of Edina’s public spaces with two- and three-dimensional art.
