FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edina Fire Chief elected President of Minnesota State Fire Chiefs
Association
Edina, Minn., Nov. 19, 2009 – Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer was recently elected president of the
Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) board of directors. He will begin his two-year term on
Jan. 1, 2010, upon completion of his current two-year term as the organization’s vice president.
The MSFCA is made up of over 2,000 chief fire officers representing nearly 600 fire departments in
Minnesota. The goal of the organization is to assist fire professionals across the state on issues such as
education and training. They are also a primary driving force for fire code recommendations and fire-
related legislation in Minnesota.
“It is a pretty neat honor to be selected by your peers,” said Scheerer. “This is a strong organization with
really good people involved, and I look forward to continuing to help people during my term.”
Scheerer, a native of Edina, began working for the Edina Fire Department as a part-time volunteer in 1981.
He became a full-time firefighter/paramedic in 1989, was promoted to lieutenant in 1996 and captain in
1998. In January 1999, he became one of the youngest Fire Chiefs in the area. He holds a Liberal Arts
degree from the University of Minnesota and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire
Officer Program.
The MSFCA board of directors meets five times a year and is comprised of two elected officers as well as
multiple state, regional and local representatives. The organization produces a bimonthly magazine and
also works with other firefighter organizations across the state. Members are asked to take part in a
variety of sub-committees, which meet regularly. These committees range from public education and
emergency management to legislation and fire code. Scheerer has been a long-time chair of the MSFCA
emergency medical services committee and has been active in many more.
