Long named Edina Police Chief
Edina, Minn., Dec. 21, 2009 – Edina City Manager Gordon Hughes recently announced the
appointment of Jeff Long as Chief of Police.
Long will assume the duties of Chief on Jan. 1, 2010. Long succeeds Michael Siitari who will retire on
Dec. 31, after 31 exemplary years of service to the City of Edina, the last 10 years as Chief.
An Edina native, Long has been a member of the Edina Police Department since 1987 when he
started his career as a Community Service Officer. In 1989, he was hired as a Patrol Officer. In 1994,
he was promoted to Detective, in 1997 to Sergeant, in 2001 to Lieutenant and in 2008 to Deputy
Chief.
Long holds a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement. He is a graduate of Northwestern University’s
Police and Command School. He is a 2004 graduate of the FBI National Academy. Long grew up in
Edina and graduated from Benilde St. Margaret’s High School. He and his family continue to reside in
the community where he has been and continues to be involved in numerous community
organizations and activities.
Long is the fifth Edina Chief to come from the ranks of the Edina Police Department. Former chiefs
Siitari, Bill Bernhjelm, Len Kleven and Craig Swanson were likewise promoted from within the ranks
of department.

and service to our residents to ensure that Edina remains the preeminent place for living, learning,
raising families and doing business,” said Hughes upon the appointment.
