Jake Heckert was promoted to the position effective Dec. 4. He oversees the department’s Professional Standards Division which includes Recruiting and Hiring, Professional Development and Internal Affairs. Heckert will also oversee Training, Records, Property and Evidence. Heckert will continue to oversee the Cadet program. “I am very excited for the opportunity to move into the role of Lieutenant and take on the new responsibilities,” Heckert said. “Over my nearly 19 years as a law enforcement officer, I have constantly been striving to meet the needs of the officers I work with and the community I serve.” Heckert earned a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement at Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2004, and a master’s degree in public administration and non-profit administration from Metropolitan State University in 2013. He was hired by the Edina Police Department as a Patrol Officer in 2013. He was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 2020 and then Administrative Sergeant in 2022. Over the course of his career with the Edina Police Department, he has served as an Emergency Medical Technician, Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) and Instructor, and the West Command Mobile Field Force Platoon Leader. He also has overseen the Edina K-9 Unit, Edina Mobile/Field Force Team, DRE program, Cadet program, training and standards, TZD and DWI officer grant, and the department’s uniform budget. Heckert received the Officer of the Year Award in 2014. He also earned numerous awards from Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Office of Traffic Safety for his efforts in DWI enforcement.
