Edina Fire Department Responds to Two Kitchen Fires
Edina, Minn., Nov. 29, 2023 – Edina Fire Department’s Fire Marshal Dave Ehmiller has concluded two recent kitchen fires were accidents.
Around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, the Edina Fire Department responded to a multifamily residential fire alarm with sprinkler activation at 3650 Hazelton Road. Ehmiller investigated
the fire and determined one of the resident’s cats likely climbed on the stovetop and ignited a burner, causing items stored on the stove to catch fire. Unfortunately, there was not
a smoke alarm in the kitchen, so it took some time before another smoke alarm went off in the apartment. Once the smoke alarm went off, the residents were alerted and able to escape
the home with their two cats. Three people were displaced, but were relocated to another unit.
Around 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, firefighters responded to a small kitchen fire on Circle West. Ehmiller determined shopping bags placed on the stovetop were ignited by a heating element
that had been accidentally turned on. In this fire, the occupants of the home were notified immediately of the fire by a smoke alarm and were able to escape and call 911. There was
minimal fire damage due to the early notification and a prompt response by the Fire Department. No one was displaced due to this fire.
“Working smoke alarm are crucial for early detection of a fire, so make sure to check your smoke alarm locations and make sure they are in working condition,” said Ehmiller. “One other
takeaway from these kitchen fires is to make sure combustible materials like paper or plastic are not stored on or near cooking surfaces.”
