$1.4 Million Scammed from Edina Residents This Year
Edina, Minn., Oct. 18, 2023 – From January to September 2023, the Edina Police Department received reports of $1,470,950 being stolen from Edina residents through scams. The average
age of someone scammed was 60. The Edina Police Department reminds residents about the importance of remaining cautious and informed to protect themselves from scams.
According to Police, the senior population is the main target of scammers. It is imperative to be on the lookout for red flags and refrain from providing any personal information to
prevent being taken advantage of. Recent scams include pop-up ads or emails saying your computer has been infected with malware, as well as calls or voicemails claiming there is a
warrant out for your arrest, a “loved one” calling to say they are in trouble or have been arrested, or a bank saying that your account has been hacked.
There is no shortage of information publicly available about you online. Scammers can easily access information such as names of family members, past addresses and companies. Just because
someone on the phone can give facts about you does not mean they are legitimate.
“We’ve seen victims lose large amounts of money to scammers,” said Detective Morgan Piper. “Even people who are aware of scams fall victim, due to the scammers’ ability to cause panic
and fear. Take a moment to slow down and get in touch with Police or a trusted friend or family member. Ask them what they think of the situation before giving out any of your information.
The best way to protect yourself is to not answer the phone or click on any links unless you are certain that the source is legitimate.”
Sgt. Emily Jepson will share tips on scams at the next Safe Seniors presentation 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square. It is free to
attend, but please check in at the front desk of the Senior Center.
