INTRODUCTION: A proposed plan for Public Art activities has been developed by the lead Commissioners for Work Plan Initiative #1. Time for discussion and questions is planned for this meeting. ATTACHMENTS: Description Proposed Public Art Activities Plan From Struggling to Healing A Public Art Project Presented by Edina High School Mosaic and City of Edina Arts and Culture Commission Partnership Written proposal by Shreya Konkimalla and Lindsay DiLorenzo November 5, 2020 From Struggling to Healing: An Interactive Virtual Gallery Web site and Podcast Public Art Presented by Edina High School Mosaic/City of Edina Arts and Culture Commission Partnership Winter 2020/2021 (Ongoing) Objective Mosaic, a diverse Edina High School student-led group, is focused on creating an inclusive school culture. Mosaic’s goal, with the Arts and Culture Commission (city government) and Edina Community Foundation (ECF) support, is to generate awareness about our community’s journey towards racial equity and social justice. The objective of this joint partnership is to celebrate all voices and all perspectives in our community through a wide definition of The Arts. Creating space for an open and honest dialogue about experiences, challenges, backgrounds and history is crucial in building and strengthening a cohesive community. During a pandemic, in lieu of a physical gallery and in keeping with current state and city guidelines, we are focused on creative ways to foster deeper connections and interactions supporting Edina residents. Project Overview “From Struggling to Healing”, a virtual art gallery experience featuring local Edina artists. We will create an art exhibition exploring how we, as members of the Edina community, have experienced the challenges and mending of this past year. Whether it is through visual or performance art - painting, sculpture, photography, poetry, music, spoken word, dance - we will be open to all mediums that explore our community members’ expression from struggling to healing during the upheaval of 2020. All two and three dimensional work will be considered for this virtual web site exhibition which will be online through the end of the year. A podcast will then be broadcast in 2021 that explores the journeys of several artists featured in the virtual gallery. The initial project will be live on an interactive web site, viewable to the public. The pieces of art will be organized into collections by theme, medium, and age segmentation. The title of the artwork as well as the artist statement for each piece will all be highlighted. Additionally, there will be a moderated comment section by Mosaic Club members. The most popular pieces will be made into a traveling exhibit - brought to life in a physical setting within the community - viewable at local businesses to support the community and patronage, as performance art festival, or an addition to our large July 4th parade. To expand reach and initiate a broader conversation, we are focused on creating opportunities for discourse and dialogue through interactive events, social media, and podcasts. Options include the following: ● One day of HOPE - graffiti workshops - for kids at Edina local parks. Facilitators will work with kids to create large chalk murals/graffiti installations/candy explosion at parks throughout Edina. This will be a socially distanced event for the community. The Twin Cities has several POC-led nonprofits that facilitate programs, connecting youth, art and community at large, such as The Teach and Learn Program, Juxtaposition Arts, Goodspace Murals, Flow Mural, Sprayfinger, to name a few. ● Student-produced short documentaries focused on the theme “From Struggling to Healing” will highlight Edina’s unique approach to explore residents’ expression of this subject. We have secured a documentary film producer who is thrilled to work with students on this project. ● A podcast to further promote inclusivity, encouraging additional community conversation. The format will include dialogue between a Mosaic club members and featured artists with questions submitted by the community contributing to a deeper discussion on their particular piece of art and its connection to the Edina community. Like the web site, this podcast would be posted for a free public program. Project Development Mosaic will lead this project on all levels, for example: ● Outreach (submission acquisition from community - adults, students, teachers, etc) ● Technology/Web site development, production and hosting ● Art/content submission and publication ● Site moderation ● Marketing and publicity ● Content of gallery and podcast ● Kickoff event planning The Arts and Culture Commission and the ECF will play a supporting roles as requested by Mosaic, most notably assisting with funding, technology, and communications. We will be use the new rubric developed by Human Rights and Relations Commission (HRRC) to guide our efforts most importantly through the submission and posting process of artwork. We will also ensure members of HRRC are involved in various areas of the project. Status: Met with Michael Pretasky, Vice Principal of EHS and the Mosaic advisor to discuss roles and recruitment.
