Recommended Public Art Selections
Installation of two public art pieces was included in the budget for the expansion of the North Parking
Ramp at 50th and France. One piece serves as an attractive cover of a functional snow chute. The
second piece was originally conceived as a mural to adorn a 4-story tall exterior wall that encloses a
new elevator.
The project architect recommended two local artists who are familiar with Edina and with the overall
redevelopment project that is under construction on Market Street. City staff worked with local
property owners, members and staff of the 50th & France Business Association and members of Public
Art Edina to set the overall direction and to provide guidance to the artists. After several themes were
introduced by each artist, the favorite five options were distributed to more than 2,000 stakeholders
and the general population of Edina. Nearly 800 people returned the survey.
As with most surveys, the opinions varied wildly. Several people were opposed to one particular
design. Some people did not like any of the choices. Some people were opposed to public art
altogether. Strong preference was shown for two particular designs. Those two designs are attached.
The two preferred design concepts are recommended to be refined and created. Fabricators are
intended to be engaged in the near future so that the new artwork can be unveiled when the North
Ramp Expansion is completed in September 2018.
Input from the Arts & Culture Commission is requested so that the final design can enhance the
business district and be enjoyed for many years. It would be helpful if a few members of the
Commission could meet with the staff and artists as they finalize their designs.
