VI. Reports/Recommendations
A. Public Art Edina
Commissioner Gunness reviewed and gave an update on the student sculpture competition. She
indicated they went through 150 maquettes and it was very hard to narrow it down to a few
finalists. Commissioner Gunness proposed because the Public Art Working Group has decided
to not do their adult rotating sculpture competition this year that they use some of that money
to get more of the student sculptures built. Commissioner Gunness showed the top nine
student sculptures.
Commission Gunness indicated there have probably been three to four artists who are
interested in trying to help them out with the student sculptures. In addition they have also

reached out to an administrator of a community workshop at the Community Center and two of
those guys have already offered to build two of them. She thinks they will be able to get a lot of
them made if not all nine of them.
Commissioner Gunness explained she hasn’t met with the Public Art Working Group since the
May meeting when they were on hold. She stated since the Arts & Culture Commission needs
to spend $10,000 on public art she asked the commission to think about how they would like to
prioritize spending the money. Part of the money has already been committed to pay the artists
to keep their pieces of art one more year until it is figured out what will be done next year in
addition to not having an empty space there all year.
The commissioners asked questions and had a discussion regarding the student art and
prioritizing the $8,000 left in the fund.
Motion made by Hegley to accept the recommendation from Public Art to allocate the
funds to three different categories one is sustaining works already in place for another
year for $2,000, two is to negotiate with artists to produce as many of the nine finalists
artworks from the school programs as submitted and judged and if any funds remain
utilize those in the highest priority of conservation. Motion seconded by Chandler.
Motion carried.
There was a discussion on the importance of Public Art and the working group that managed the
process. Commissioner Gunness gave a briefing and there was a discussion of what is best for
the ongoing activities.
Motion made by Rubin to disband the Public Art Working Group but the commitment to
Public Art activities will continue as part of the Arts & Culture Commission. Motion
seconded by Chandler. Motion carried.
It was made very clear that the role for Public Art would not be diminished by this move.
Commissioner Morgan Nelson offered to draft a letter to the Public Art Working Group letting
them know the working group has been disbanded.
The commission thanked Commissioner Gunness for all of her hard work with the Public Art
Working Group.
VII. Chair and Member Comments
Chair Rubin informed the commission there was a Comprehensive Plan half-way check-in on May 3
that was hosted by the Planning Commission and City Council. They were asked to present a three
minute summary of the work they have done without repeating what the Comprehensive Plan is. He
noted it was very well accepted as well as they received some very nice comments from the Planning
Commission and City Council members who were there.
