Reports/Recommendations Draft Minutes☒ Approved Minutes☐ Approved Date: A. Create Monthly Schedule for Discussion of 2017 Work Plan Initiatives • June and July – Initiative 1 • August - Initiative 3 • September - Initiative 7 • October - Initiative 6 The Commission discussed creating a tangible outcome and a review and additional thinking about what has already been done. The Vice-Chair asked that members submit a recommendation of the past information to help create a written report of feasibility. Member Suckow suggested inviting other commissions to ACC events and to attend other commission meetings and present the vision of the ACC. Another suggestion was the ACC facilitate speakers in the community to talk about the impact of art in a community and to help embrace art. The goal is to add value up front rather than provide a critique after the fact. It was recommended that all City Commissioners be added to the Public art Edina Opening Reception invitation. The idea of a speak series or an education event in partnership with Edina Community Education was proposed. Member Chaffee asked for clarification on what the Arts & Culture Commission stands for. B. 2017 Arts & Culture Commission Work Plan Initiative 1 The Commission discussed previous documents created by Sutton and Associates, Schuler Shook and the Grandview Task Force. Vice-Chair Chandler offered that the Commission needs a document that states what is the position of the Arts & Culture Commission on a new art center. It was suggested that small groups of Commissioners visit other art centers – Minnetonka Center for the Arts, Artistry in Bloomington and the White Bear Lake Center for the Arts. Vice-Chair Chandler asked Liaison Frey to schedule dates and publish the dates to anyone who is available to go in late June or mid-July. It would be helpful to have a list of questions such as budget, participation, trends for the contact at each center. Commissioner Meifert will review the 2012 Sutton report, Commissioner Chaffee will review the Grandview Task Force and Commissioner Suckow will review the Schuler Shook information. List three things we stand for, and limit the presentation to five minutes. C. Articulated Conversation of Arts & Culture Commission By-Laws List of Duties There was a discussion of the list of duties from the By-Laws to help form the ACC vision. Reference the list of duties as to what the role of the Commission is and what it is not. IX. Correspondence And Petitions A. Public Art Edina Report Draft Minutes☒ Approved Minutes☐ Approved Date: Commissioner Gunness reported that she requested the Walk with the Mayor in October be focused on the sculptures on the Promenade. She stated there are seven sculpture sites with one not filled. Chair Gunness is working with Shannon Steven to create a Call for Sculpture for Children and market it for Public Art Edina and the Commission. There was a discussion of a utility box wrap for children with the possibility of Commissioner Meifert working with 3M to get the wraps free of charge. Public Art Chair Gunness stated that students would be asked to answer a question with the utility boxes to connect people. The Mayor has signed a proclamation that June 14 is Public Art Day, and it is an ‘ask day’ at the Sculpture Artist Showcase. Another idea is to have a breakfast in the fall to talk about public art and ask for donations. Commissioner Gunness provided a report that the sculpture installs and de-installs progressed smoothly. The Opening Reception to Honor the Sculptors will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. at Pinstripes Bistro with the Mayor in attendance. Vice-Chair Chandler asked Student Member Howe to report on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. X. Chair and Member Comments None. XI. Staff Comments None. XII.
