INTRODUCTION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Public Art Edina - Approve Expenditure KCI – Condition Assessment & Treatment Proposal – Page 1 of 2 PROJECT PROPOSAL Client Name: Barbara La Valleur, Chair, Public Art Edina Contact Info: 7621 Edinborough Way, Unit 2110 Edina, MN 55435 612-578-2422 barbara.lavalleur@gmail.com PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Public Art Edina is in need of a General Condition Survey of its collection of approximately 18 outdoor sculptures and 2 indoor works of art, located around the city of Edina. PROPOSAL: In order to carry out the examinations and to write up the resulting report, KCI will travel to Edina, MN by car and examine all sculptures in the Public Art Edina collection with Barbara La Valleur or another representative from Public Art Edina accompanying. The conservator will photodocument and record the condition of each work of art in a File Maker Pro database. Offsite, after the examinations, KCI will use the survey data to prepare a written Survey Report, including cost estimates and treatment priorities for each sculpture. There are two types of reports we can provide: OPTION 1: Survey Spreadsheet Report and Summary Report (see attached example) This option is recommended for the first few years that you have a collection survey done. The survey spreadsheet lists every sculpture, its condition, recommendations for the sculpture in prioritized order of need, and cost estimates. A summary of the data in the spreadsheet is provided and general collection-wide recommendations and observations are recorded. The summary report will help you make sense of the survey data spreadsheet so you can most easily understand your collection’s maintenance needs and how to address them most effectively. Cost Estimate for Option 1: $2,080.00 OPTION 2: Survey Spreadsheet Only (see attached example) Option 2 provides the same data for each artwork as Option 1, but does not include the written summary. This format is typically used by clients who have worked with us for a number of years, and who are more familiar with the survey process and their collection’s maintenance needs. However, this KCI – Condition Assessment & Treatment Proposal – Page 2 of 2 option still provides valuable information about and prioritized recommendations for every work of art in your collection. Cost Estimate for Option 2: $1,560.00 Prepared by Conservator: Laura Kubick Report Date: 8/8/2016 Option Chosen by Client: _____________________________________________ The undersigned authorizes and directs Kristin Cheronis Inc. (KCI) to carry out the aforementioned conservation and/or restoration treatment and take such action as KCI deems appropriate in connection with the treatment. The undersigned warrants: (i) that the undersigned is the sole owner(s) (or authorized agent of the owners) of the work(s) of art described above and has full authority to direct KCI to undertake the proposed treatment; (ii) the work(s) of art described above is insured by the institution or owner against any and all losses, and that such insurance will be in place from the time the artwork is delivered to KCI until it is received back by the owner/agent. The depositing institution or owner agrees to pay the cost of all conservation services plus materials (7%), not exceeding the above estimated cost by more than (10%) without the express written approval of the depositing institution or owner. All transportation and related insurance costs are the responsibility of the owner or agent of the item. To:Edina Arts and Culture Commission Item Type: Correspondence From:Michael Frey, Art Center General Manager Item Activity: Subject:Report, Public Art Edina November 17, 2016 Information CITY OF EDINA 4801 West 50th Street Edina, MN 55424 www.edinamn.gov ACTION REQUESTED: INTRODUCTION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Report, Public Art Edina November 17, 2016 Public Art Edina Report to the Arts and Culture Commission November 17, 2016 • ACTION ITEM Ronald (Ron) Koeska attended the October Public Art Edina meeting and requested to become a member. Ron is on the board of Franconia Sculpture Park and brings a decade’s long interest in and supporter of art and in particular public art. I request the EACC approve adding him to Public Art Edina. • ACTION ITEM Public Art Chair La Valleur requests a vote to approve spending $2,080 to hire Laura Kubick, Associate Conservator with Kristin Cheronis, Inc. to create a Survey Spreadsheet Report and Summary Report of sculptures in Edina. Public Art Edina voted unanimously to have Laura Kubick create these documents after viewing all of Public Art Edina’s permanent collection to provide us with the needed information to create a plan to care for our collection in a prioritized order with needs and cost estimates. An initial tally of Public Art Edina’s permanent collection indicates at least 20 permanent pieces valued at more than $300,000. Cost of the survey will be taken from Public Art Edina funds at the Edina Community Foundation. • A lengthy discussion was held about changing the way our annual rotating exhibit takes place. Ideas were shared about the possibility of having all installations and de-installations occur either over two days or on the same day and creating an “event atmosphere to engage more with the public”. It was suggested that the City’s Public Works Department could do the de-installations as well as the installations under the guidance of the artists. The idea of asking local businesses and/or civic groups to be a part of and sponsor such an event was brought forth. Member La Valleur asked if the City would be able to cover the insurance vs. having the artists doing that. Another topic was discussed if we want to follow several regional public art sculpture cities whereby they offer $1,000 to $2,000 to artists for displaying each sculptures for one year. Member Katy Kinnich gave a report about several cities in Minnesota and how they organize their sculpture exhibits. She said Hopkins awards $500 for each sculpture and they award prizes of $300 each for two people’s choice awards. Mankato provides $1,000 with two winners receiving $1,000 each. St. Cloud gives $2,000 per sculpture with awards of $1,000 and $500 in two areas. St. Cloud had a United Arts grant to pay the stipend. Installation suggestions included inviting children and youth through art programs at schools to be a part of the event. Another suggestion was to invited members of the community (businesses, civic groups, individuals, families) to “adopt a sculpture” to keep an eye on it, support its funding etc. Staff Liaison Frey suggested installation and de-installation could be done on the same day like Sioux Falls, SD, which has over 50 sculptures in their annual rotating exhibit. • Ann Kattreh, Director of Parks and Recreation who attended the meeting, suggested using a standardized mount/pod, which has been the topic of several discussion in past meetings. Member Gregg designed a template last year. Director Kattreh also said she would look into whether the City could cover the insurance for sculptures on loan for the rotating exhibit that has in the past been covered by the artist. • Residents who live in the Grandview condos are raising about $16,000 to purchase Egghead by Kimber Fiebiger. The sculpture was a People’s Choice Award winner two years ago and was on display on a raised pod at the Grandview site becoming a beloved piece. The sculpture, currently being exhibited in Montana, has been purchased and will remain there. The artist has temporarily installed a similar, smaller sculpture until she creates a new Egghead which will then be permanently installed in the spring. • Public Art agreed to send a congratulatory card to the City of Edina Communications Department in recognition of their second regional Emmy for Public Art Profiles. Respectfully submitted by Barbara La Valleur
