Edina Arts & Culture Commission
VIRTUAL MEETING
June 24, 2021
4:30 p.m.
I. Call to Order
Chair Sorensen called the meeting to order at 4:32 p.m.
II. Roll Call
Answering roll call were Commissioners Chandler, Fram, Johnson, Rubin, Sorensen,
Stemmler, Suckow, Westlund
Absent was Commissioner Shen
Staff present: Parks and Recreation Director Perry Vetter, Assistant Recreation and Facilities
Director Tracy Petersen, Art Center General Manager, Susan Tarnowski.
III. Approval of Meeting Agenda
Motion made by Rubin to approve the meeting agenda. Motion seconded by Suckow.
Roll call vote. Motion carried.
IV. Approval of Meeting Minutes
Motion made by Chandler to approve the May 27, 2021 minutes. Motion seconded by
Johnson. Roll call vote. Motion carried.
VI. Reports/Recommendations
A. 2021 Work Plan Updates
Initiative #1 - Commissioners Sorenson reported
• Initiative assignment - up to four voting commissioners and an unlimited number of
Student Commissions may be assigned to any initiative; Commissioners now assigned
to this initiative are Fram, Stemmler, Sorenson, Johnson, and Student Shen
• Update - inclusion of Virtual Gallery artists in Friday night concerts on 50th & France
• Update - Fourth of July parade float planning
• Future discussion - Fall Into the Arts Festival Booth
• members will discuss with the engagement coordinator any technical improvements
for the Virtual Gallery
Initiative #2 - Commissioners Fram and Stemmler reported
• Evaluation: Traffic to the site increased due to marketing efforts
• Data inquiries
o Amount of time individuals are spending on the site
o Whether the site is user-friendly
o Best practices for improving engagement in the virtual world
Initiative #3 - Commissioner Rubin Reported
• Will be submitting a draft report on how public art is addressed in other cities;
described St. Louis Park with a stand-alone 501(c3) that works with the City Planning
Council
• Need clear description of what is within the purview of the ACC
• Need to know how City Staff are involved in public art
Initiative #4 – Commissioners Chandler and Suckow reported
• Commissioner Stemmler will leave Initiative #4 due to being added to #1
• Positive kick-off meeting with Commissioners, City Staff, and external consultants re:
a new center for pottery (and other 3D program offerings)
• Timeframe (around labor Day) is workable
• Other organizations in the Metro that could be used for the environmental scanning
• Parameters need to be defined
• Questions about reopening of the current Art Center
B. 2021-2022 Work Plan Development
• The Fund Balance, less any encumbered expenses, is anticipated to be $64,000
• The fund rolls over each year
• The 2021 Public Art Plan is a three-year plan; provides continuity for Work Plan
• The timeline was shared again with Commissioners
VII. Staff Comments
Director Vetter commented:
• A new Arts & Culture Commissioner is scheduled to be appointed at the July 21,
2021 City Council meeting
• Reinforced idea that additional public art is possible
• Recently renamed the Garden Park to Yancy park
• The Commission meeting on July 22 will be in a hybrid approach; City Hall will be
opened to allow participants to attend
General Manager Tarnowski commented:
• Edina Fall Into the Arts Festival (September 11 & 12) will expand to its 2019 size
• A booth is reserved for Arts & Culture Commission (perhaps shared)
• Speaking of Authors … continues and is available on YouTube and Edina TV
• Youth Summer Art Camps and Youth Tech Camps continue: themes have included
Arty Animals, STEAM Week, Exploring Art & Nature; Puppetry; Minnesota Watters
Painting, and Dinosaurs and Fossils; drawing and painting, Acrylic Pour, macrame, and
printmaking continue throughout July for adults
VIII. Adjournment
Motion made by Rubin to adjourn the June 24, 2021 meeting of the Arts & Culture
Council at 6:08. Motion seconded by Westlund. Roll call vote. Motion carried.
