1. CALL TO ORDER
Mr. Van Valkenburg called the meeting to order at 7:30 a.m.
2. APPROVAL OF MAY 18, 1989, MINUTES
Peter R. Spokes MOVED TO ACCEPT THE MINUTES OF THE MAY 18, 1989, MEETING. Harriette
Bach seconded the motion. Dodie Paul stated she was present at the May meeting and
should be added to the "Board Present" section. Correction noted and made. MOTION
CARRIED.
3. DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Director's report accepted. Celebrate the Arts will be an agenda item at the
September meeting.
4. GIFT AND GALLERY REPORT
Mollie Paulson extended an invitation to the instructors' opening tonight. She
indicated an exhibit at Braemar Ice Arena. The Benefit Sale received well over
$1000. She reminded board members to save their things earlier. The scene contest
display is at Marquette Bank for another month. The entries were excellent. Judy
Metzger was the winner.
5. BUILDING PROGRAM UPDATE
Mr. Kojetin indicated the bids are scheduled to be opened September 14 and awarded
September 18 at the Council meeting. This schedule has changed by two weeks from the
original schedule. Digging should begin a week after the September 18 Council
meeting with a contractors' meeting during the week after the bids are awarded.
Mr. Spokes asked if there is a groundbreaking ceremony planned. Mr. Kojetin said not
yet, but it is a good idea. He and Diana will put something together. It was
decided to schedule a groundbreaking ceremony September 24 at 4 p.m. Invitations
could include Art Center board members, volunteers, instructors, City Council, Park
Board members, past Art Center board members, past Council members, past Park Board
members, Art Center members, and Art Center donors.

6. EDINBOROUGH REPORT
Mrs. Greer reported the August demonstrations are from the Art Center. She stated
the current children's exhibit is "darling"; the adults love it. The park is closed
this week to re-finish the floors.
7. EDINAMITE UPDATE
Ms. Kelm distributed Edinamite meeting notes and made some comments. The
entertainment scheduled will be wonderful. They may shorten the music to end at 9:15
p.m., but they are flexible. She reminded board members that the tables will seat
eight people. Tickets are $25 each. Edinamite is November 18 at Edinborough Park.
Everyone is responsible for selling 20 tickets or more. Diana indicated it will not
be difficult to sell 400 tickets.
Mrs. Clark asked about insulting the artists by having people getting up during a
performance to bid at the silent auction. She suggested selling more tickets and
cancel the auction. The board agreed they couldn't afford to cancel the auction.
Mrs. Clark said the overall profit last year was $21,000 with $13,000 being from the
auction. Mrs. Greer understands Mrs. Clark's concern, but the auction is only during
a certain time. The artists should understand the situation. Mrs. Clark asked if
the guests will feel comfortable to get up during a performance to bid on something.
Ms. Kelm said she and Mary Lou are meeting with Bill Bach to map out the event. She
will let Mrs. Clark see the proposed layout.
Mrs. Clark asked for a list of the people invited to Edinamite. Diana asked Mrs.
Clark for a list of people invited to Celebrate the Arts. Mrs. Clark said she
doesn't want to overlap. Diana said these are two distinctly different activities.
Mrs. Paugh said she would be annoyed if she did not receive an invitation to
Edinamite. Diana suggested that Mrs. Clark cross out people she doesn't want invited
to Edinamite and that it would be each board member's decision on who they would like
to invite. The next Edinamite meeting will be Tuesday, August 29, at 7:30 a.m. at
City Hall.
Dodie Paul volunteered to work on the invitation mailing list.
Mr. Van Valkenburg indicated the next meeting will be September 21. We will
specifically discuss Celebrate the Arts and Edinamite.
