CALL TO ORDER Mr. Van Valkenburg called the meeting to order at 7:30 a.m. II. APPROVAL OF THE JULY 19. 1990 MINUTES Peter R. Spokes MOVED TO APPROVE THE JULY 19, 1990 MINUTES. Dodie Paul SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION CARRIED. III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. Classes - Ms. Hedges indicated that classes are going well. The Tuesday night classes are filled. There are over 50 people signed up. B. Finances - Ms. Hedges indicated that the gift shop and gallery are still down. She feels this is due to the construction. More items have been selling in the new area. C. Fundraising - Tile Wall - Mr. Van Valkenburg asked the board if they feel a committee is needed to have board members sell tiles. It was noted that this is the Art Center's big fundraiser. There are 224 tiles and 25 have been sold. The price is $100 per tile. A goal has been set to have 80 tiles sold by October 21st. There will be some tiles up on the wall by the Art Center's opening. It is hoped that once people see the wall they will purchase a tile. Ms. Hedges stated that 4000 letters have been sent. Mr. Spokes suggested sending a second mailing to past donors, board members and the ECCO list The board felt at this time to try a second mailing instead of organizing a committee. D. Juried Show - Ms. Hedges indicated that this years Juried Show earned $965.00 more than last year. Mr. Spokes asked what was done differently to make such a big difference. Ms. Hedges stated that the people were allowed an unlimited number of entries. Ms. Hedge's pointed out that there was a problem with people coming into classrooms to see the entries when a class was being held. Mr. Spokes indicated that maybe there should be gallery hours so people are not wondering through. Also, people will not be disappointed when they cannot see the entries. It was also suggested there should be a sign indicating that there are more drawings in the lower studio. There was a discussion of students and instructors work being together. The only rules for the Juried Show is that you need to be a member of the Edina Art Center. It was stated the show needs both students and instructors to participate. Ms. Hedges indicated that the three judges did an excellent job. Mr. Kojetin indicated that next Thursday, September 27th, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. there will be a painting party downstairs. Friends and spouses are invited to help. The floor, walls and graphics will be redone. IV. EDINBOROUGH REPORT Pat Greer indicated that Edinborough is having a Juried Show on Sunday, October 7th. It is being put on by the Minnesota Art Association. Everything will be done in the one day. Ms. Greer indicated that sales have been down and she feels it is because of the economy. Ms. Greer also stated that a lot is going on now that cold weather is on its way. V. BUILDING UPDATE Mr. Dickey indicated that the building is 99% completed. The last 1% will be completed before the grand opening. Mr. Kojetin indicated that the maintenance crews will be working on the outside of the building, resodding and redoing the parking lot. A few trees and stumps have been removed. There are now more parking spaces. Ms. Hedges indicated that Mollie Paulson is taking care of the entertainment for the Art Center's opening. The music will be the 42nd Street players as well as a flute players. Artists are being lined up right now to do some demonstrations. Ms. Hedges stated that people are needed to act as receptionists and take care of food. Ms. Hedges stated that Marion Ward may want to work on food. Betty Paugh indicated that she would help Marion Ward. Mr. Kojetin indicated that the Art Center opening could possibly follow the same format as the Arneson Acres opening. It was suggested that people be stationed at each room to answer any questions and identify special features. VI. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 8:00 a.m.
