Harriette Bach MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 15, 1987, MEETING. Peter
Spokes seconded the motion.
III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT
A. CLASSES
Class enrollment for the Fall II session stands at 604. Total financial data will be
available at the end of this month. The totals are $3000 more than last year.
Most winter classes begin the week of February 8. We have three new instructors:
Margaret Bussey, J. Michael Gatlin, and Tobie Dicker.
Our Centennial Snow Sculpture Contest will take place on February 12 and 13. We have
extra flyers available if anyone is interested in distributing some.
B. EXHIBITS
Currently we are showing Wally Shoop--bronzes--and Rick Kelley--Wildlife prints and
paintings. Attendance and sales have been disappointing. A thank you to Sandra
Clark for being at the opening as hospitality coordinator. Our next opening will be
on February 7 and is entitled "People in the Gallery" an invitational portrait show
featuring 11 area artists. Bill Dietrichson will be demonstrating pencil drawn
portraits at the opening.
OUTREACH EXHIBITS
VERNON TERRACE OF EDINA - Marian Alstad's watercolors will be featured at the grand
opening on Sunday, January 24, at noon. We will be working with Vernon Terrace to
provide classes and lectures for weekly programming.
- 1 -
MARQUETTE BANK OF EDINA - Currently showing are reproductions of Centennial photos.
In February we will present an extension of our "People in the Gallery" exhibit
portrait show. We have not yet received a reply of our request from Marquette Bank
for funding.
MINNEAPOLIS LEAGUE OF CATHOLIC WOMEN - Now showing is work by Elizabeth Hood
Anderson.
NORTH MEMORIAL HOSPICE UNIT - Through February is a watercolor exhibit by Art Center
instructors. In March we will present pieces by Agnes Fine.
We have been contacted by Ridgepoint, a retirement center near Ridgedale to provide
rotating exhibits.
NOTE: Although we believe that it is an important aspect of the Art Center to
provide this service, we may have reached a limit in our rotating Exhibit Outreach
Program. Without a volunteer or board member in the position of exhibits, it may
become too time consuming. We may want to consider asking facilities for a donation
and/or monthly rental fee to cover administrative costs. We may also want to limit
the outreach to Edina facilities.
Pat Greer stated it depends on the number of paintings in the exhibit. Mr. Van
Valkenburg stated if it takes your time, the facilities should pay. If they are a
non-profit organization and they cannot pay, we shouldn't do the outreach program.
Judy Smith asked if there would be a monthly fee. Diana answered a monthly or yearly
fee. Each facility has the outreach a different length of time. Peter Spokes stated
Diana should look into the issue and come back with a policy next month.
Sharon Hale MOVED TO ESTABLISH THE POLICY OF CHARGING FACILITIES $50 PER MONTH OR
$500 PER YEAR FOR THE OUTREACH PROGRAM AT THE DIRECTOR'S DISCRETION. Sandra Clark
seconded the motion. MOTION CARRIED.
C. FINANCIAL RECAP
Year end totals will be available any day now, and we are estimating that we came
very close to a break even year. A few areas of expenditures were over our
projections. Of course, instructors' salaries were increased with ratio to an
increase in enrollment. (We had a 33 percent increase in revenues for class
registrations.) Mr. Van Valkenburg asked Diana to mail the year end totals to each
board member when she receives them.
D. OTHER
1. Art in the Park - Donna Skagerberg sent a letter to Mr. Van Valkenburg (enclosed)
explaining her views on the 1987 Art in the Park. In response to Donna Skagerberg's
letter to Jim Van Valkenburg is that we need a great deal of organization if this
program is to be successful. We need strong leadership with a committee chairperson
and committee members of at least four members. Members need specific jobs and
timetables similar to how Lee Heikens organizes the Juried Show.
Diana's comments regarding Donna's statement, "The whole thing is more trouble than
it is worth" is raising the questions of: Is there already market saturation for
arts and crafts fairs with shows in every shopping center plus 50th and France,
Uptown, and our own holiday sale exhibit?
- 2 -
The board will review the letter and discuss it at the next meeting.
2. Centennial Raffle Tickets are available here. We make $3 on each pack sold and
have brought in $156 to date.
3. Gift Shop - Mollie Paulson reported a 42 percent increase. Sales last year were
$9700 and sales this year were $16,900. The question was asked if the sign is
helping the gift shop sales. Mollie said only a few people have mentioned seeing the
sign. Pat Greer commented that it has helped to expand the Gift Shop into the other
areas of the Art Center.
4. Diana will be gone from January 26 to February 3. Mollie or other staff should
be able to answer any questions that you may have.
IV. FUND DRIVE REPORT
Peter Spokes reported on the fund drive which had a total of $2690. (copy enclosed)
Peggy Kelly asked what the goal of the fund drive was. Diana answered $5000, which
they did not meet. Mrs. Kelly asked if it bothers people to be asked twice a year to
donate to the Art Center. Mr. Spokes said the Ways and Means Committee will look
into this.
V. EDINBOROUGH REPORT
Pat Greer distributed a sheet detailing Edinborough's highlights (enclosed). Bob
Kojetin explained that the "Highlander" magazine received quarterly in the Sun is an
Edina magazine and not just an Edinborough magazine. Diana mentioned that the
"Highlander" will probably feature a different Edina artist on the cover, and as the
magazine continues, the Art Center will be getting more coverage.
VI. BENEFIT CELEBRATION FEBRUARY 27, 1988
Sharon Hale and Sandra Clark reported on the benefit celebration progress. Sharon is
working on the food. She will need help that day with decorations. Betty Paugh, Liz
Eisenbrey, and Peter Spokes volunteered to help with decorations. She needs names of
people you want invitations sent to, since they are addressing the beautiful,
hand-made invitations today. Sandra Clark reported on the silent auction. Some
items up for silent auction include a champagne cruise for 10 people, original
paintings, tickets to the Children's Theater, and elegant candy assortments. Sharon
was at the Art Center and a woman asked her about the auction. It happens that this
was Kathryn Bennett whose husband owns the Ashley Gallery and would like to donate
something. Sharon suggested when you are at a restaurant paying for your meal, show
them your invitation and ask them if they would like to donate a gift certificate for
the auction. Sandra stated each board member is responsible for six people to invite
and a minimum of two auction items.
V. ADJOURNMENT
Peter Spokes MOVED TO ADJOURN AT 8:25 AM. Harriette Bach seconded the motion.
MOTION CARRIED.
