The new fall schedules are available and are offering holiday workshops. 1300 names were deleted from the mailing list of people who had not taken clagses or become members for 15 months. A total of 2500 schedules were mailed out. The computer system is working well. B. EXHIBITS Dodie Paul attended the opening, and Sandy Clark served as hospitality person at Doug Lew's reception attended by 50 to 60 people. There were three main factors contributing to the low number of attendants: 1. it wasn't the first Sunday of the month as usual, 2. it was a beautiful day to be outside, and 3. football. Mr. Lew did send his own invitations, but he probably sent them late since he had just arrived back in the country. Edinborough has been paying 20 percent of the net on exhibits at Edinborough since January 1988; they used to pay 10 percent of the gross. To date, sales for the galleries has been $2575 to Edinborough, $1971 to Art Center. Mr. Van Valkenburg requested some explanation of how Edinborough arrived at these figures. Sunday, October 23, is Meet the Faculty Day from 2 to 4 p.m. More than twenty instructors will be at the Art Center demonstrating artwork. Diana has put together a brochure with a photograph of each instructor and their background. 1 November 6 is the holiday sale exhibit from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be a shuttle bus going from the Art Center to Edinborough arranged by Mollie Paulson and Pat Greer. If the shuttle is successful, it will continue to be used. C. FINANCIAL REPORT See attached. D. FUND RAISING Diana passed around a sample idea of the fund raising mailer. The Ways and Means Committee thought it was a good thing to try. The brochure will be very simple and hand-addressed. It will be sent to members and anyone board members would like to send to. It may be effective to include a personal note on some. It has been a year since the last fund drive; there was no spring fund drive. Dodie Paul, Pat Greer, Peggy Kelly, and Marion Ward volunteered to help address mailers. IV ART IN THE PARK - Betty Paugh Mrs. Paugh reported there were 61 actual artists. There was a petition signed by several artists who wanted their money back because they felt the Art Center did not do their part in getting more people in the park. The increased publicity did not bring any more people. Mrs. Paugh indicated the Art Center is in the business of education and art--not art fairs. Mrs. Greer mentioned the City should have helped with more professional signs in the area. Judy Smith mentioned there were three Centennial events scheduled at the same time. Diana indicated there are .just too many art and craft fairs--the area is saturated. Mrs. Paugh said usually the committee is not obligated to refund money. Twenty artists apologized for signing the petition due to pressure from other signers. It was decided to send a letter to all of the participants in the fair. Judy Smith MOVED NOT TO REFUND ANY MONEY TO TffE ARTISTS. Harriette Bach seconded the motion. MOTION CARRIED. Mrs. Paugh does not recommend doing this again- -it is not worth it. Diana mentioned Sandy Clark's house tour in December 1989; this should be another source of income if it is decided not to do Art in the Park again. Betty Paugh MOVED TO DISCONTINUE ART IN THE PARK. Judy Smith seconded the motion. MOTION CARRIED. V. HOLIDAY PARTY Judy Smith MOVED TO HAVE A 1988 HOLIDAY PARTY. Harriette Bach seconded the motion. MOTION CARRIED. NEW BOARD MEMBER Lee Heikens has resigned from the board. A letter will be written thanking her for her services. Peggy Kelly said this opening has to be advertised in the paper, but you can encourage someone to apply. Some suggested names of people who would be effective on the board were: Kathryn Bennet, Kathleen Currie, Linda Maetzold, or Dorothy and Bob Olman. VIII.CELEBRATE THE ARTS WI // " haron Hale reported that Edinborough has February 11, 1989, available for this event. There was a discussion as to the location. Some felt it should be at Braemar again because Edinborough is so wide open that it would look and seem empty. After discussion, it was decided to try_it at Edinborou There are some things that can be done to the space to it appear sma er. Mrs. Hale asked the board members to bring a list of eight auction items each member can obtain. She also indicated the need for a committee to work on the auction. IX. ROOM ADDITION UPDATE Mr. Van Valkenburg stated Mr. Dickey has drawn plans to add some space to the Art Center. The procedure begins at the Park Board; this request will be an agenda item scheduled for the November Park Board meeting. It starts with the Park Board for two reasons: 1. The Art Center is a park facility, and 2. The Park Board may have some funds to allocate to this project. We need their recommendation to go to City Council with the complete package. Peggy Kelly asked where the funds could be coming from. Mr. Van Valkenburg stated the funds could come from dedication funds, some long range funds, and some funds raised by the Art Center. The expected cost at this point is $60-70,000; and addition will make the Art.Center more profitable. Some funds have already been collected by the Art Center and are in the general fund, but Mr. Van Valkenburg would like to see them go to the building fund. X.
