APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF SEPT. 18, 1986 MEETING The minutes of the Sept. meeting were approved as written. DIRECTOR'S REPORT Classes Diana Hedges reported that class enrollment is approximately 494, which is about 50 students more than last year's statistics. Registration for Fall 2 session begins Nov. 3 with classes beginning the week of Nov. 24. We are experimenting with several classes that offer instructional tIM0 with iwilependent classroom work. We have also expanded the open studio time for members. Eventually the open studio time could be available to members joining at higher levels of member- ship only. Diana Hedges has been in contact with David Schmidt from Southview regarding classes for his students or possible outreach programs. We will be sending him information regarding openings and classes. Membership Memberships stand at 316. Although this figure is lower than last year, the dollar amount is a $1,000 increase due to raise in prices this year. Other Approximately 60 members from A.A.R.P. visited the center to view the Gallery exhibit and Taylor Knoll on Sept. 26. On Sun., Sept. 28, the Isaac Walton League met for a business meeting, slide show and tour. They presented us with a donation of $25.00. We received a letter from 1st Bank that we did not receive the grant for $5000 that was submitted in May for publications. We have written letters to area businesses about the possibilities of having a VCR donated for educational use. Fifteen letters were sent with so far only one response from Bob Romley at USA Video who can not at this time donate, but has offered to sell us one at wholesale. We will continue to try to have one donated. We are working with the Marquette Bank on rotating exhibits. In Feb. of 1987 they are planning a grand opening of their new wing with an exhibit by the Art Center faculty. The opening reception of the MN Society of Sculptors and the Mike Traub wild- life drawings was Oct. 5 and will run through Oct. 31. Sandy Clark attended as hospitality chair with Harriette Bach assisting. The opening of 8 members of the MN Crafts Council will he on Sun. Nov. 2. We will be working with the Park and Rec. V91t. Halloween Party for 1st - 3rd graders on Oct. 31 from 2 - 4 at the Comm. Center. We will be providing face painting. She asked for volunteers. Dec. 18th was set for the board and staff holiday party. Sharon Hale has offered her home. There will be no meeting that month. III. BUDGET, FEES AND CHARGES Diana Hedges made the following recommendations: Publications Reduce cost of publications by doing our own invitations to openings instead of typeset on higher quality paper. Savings of $25 per month or $300 per year. $300.00 Have school flyers printed at Community Center at a savings of $70 per session times 5 sessions - $350.00 Change format of class schedule at a savings of $500 per session or $2500.00 Advertising Eliminate the Star & Trib. ad - 5 times a year = $1300.00 Staff Have hired Kristin Hale )part time high school student) at minimum wage that will save $1000.00 Freeze on Director's salary until budget reductions are visible $500.00 Total initial recommended budget reductions $6150.00 Diana Hedges made the following recommendations to the Board with Pat Greer and Marion Ward's support. I. She reluctantly agreed to raise tuition for classes 10% as requested by City Council. This is a 21% increase since 1984. 2. Drop the 10% discount for members on Clark Gift Gallery purchases. 3. Retain 10% discount for members on supplies. Raise supply prices to customers by 5% to compensate. 4. Continue with 10% discount to members for class registrations. Note: Art Center of MN gives 20% discount plus an extra 10% for early registration. Bloomington Art Center allows 20% discount for members. Minnesota Museum at Landmark gives 15% reduction for members. 5. Allow membership fees to remain the same until next year. Note: Art Center of MN. $30 Bloomington $10 - Individual $20 - Family Minn. Museum $30 - Household $20 - Individual Edina Art Center $25 - Individual $35 - Family In conclusion, they believe that 1.t is financially unwise to raise prices of classes, increase cost of memberships and also reduce benefits at the same time. They believe that a gradual increase would he more effective in long term budget concerns. Lee Heikens feels we're in competition with lots of activities. Several
