HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-05-22 Arts Culture Commission MinutesEdina Art Center Board May 22, 1997 Edina Art Center 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Kelly, Dee Dege, Heather Randall King, Jim VanValkenburg, Sandra Clark, and Dodie Paul Members Absent: Gene Andersen, Art Dickey, Elizabeth Eisenbrey, Suzie Kelm, and George Kuebler Staff Present: Diana Hedges, John Keprios, and Solvei Swenson I. CALL TO ORDER Meeting was called to order by Chair Jim VanValkenburg at 4:03 p.m. II. CAMERA CLUB REPORT Ms. Hedges reported that the Camera Club is having a banquet June 19th at Arneson Acres. All 82 members of the Club are invited. III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. GALLERY OPENING Student Exhibit 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., May 22 to July 4th . The exhibit shows off the work the students have done. There are 159 students participating. B. JAN EPPLE GARDEN PLANS The Kelodale Garden Club is working with the Art Center to design a garden area where one can sit and paint. The garden will have a pathway and a fountain. The gardens would be maintained by the Kelodale Garden Club. C. EDINA ART FAIR The Art Center is looking for volunteers to work at the Edina Art Fair, June 6,7,8. Ms. King volunteered to help at the root beer stand. Last year the root- beer stand made $900. The Art Center will have face painting behind Taja's Restuarant. Also, Bowl-a- rama will be selling bowls to raise funds to repair the kiln. The Crosstown Camera Club will have a booth next to the Art Center's. They will be selling postcards. Ms. Hedges stated she needed judges from 10:00 - 1:00 p.m. for the Art Fair judging. Ms. Hedges stated she is also looking for volunteers for the Juried Show which is September 11 to October 23. D. MINNEAPOLIS CLUB REPORT Ms. King stated that the publicity from the Minneapolis Club fundraiser was very good and the event was excellent. The financial success wasn't as big as hoped but it did bring in $1,170 in profit. The event was good for the staff and the board since the stress of hosting it was removed. Mr. VanValkenburg thanked Ms. King for organizing the event and for its success. Ms. Dege stated she thought the event was good also. E. MEDIA LAB EXPANSION Ms. Hedges thanked Mr. VanValkenburg for his presentation on the proposed expansion to the City Council. The proposal passed. Ms. Hedges stated that the Art Center is looking forward to the expanded space. Anticipated opening will be December 7, 1997. F. OTHER The Sever Petersen vegetable stand will be in Edina again this year. The donation from Sever Petersen was raised from $2,000 to $3,000. Also, the Juried Show is expected to bring in $3,000. The Garage Sale with donated items and unsolicited donations will be around $1,000 and the Tour will be another $1,000 Mr. Keprios inquired if there has been any concerns expressed over nude art displays. Ms. Hedges stated she has received objections in regard to violence expressed or displayed in art, but not nudity. Ms. Dege stated that High School students are permitted to draw anything but won't display pictures of violence or gang related. Ms. Hedges stated that the Art Acedemy has rejected two pieces of shock value art. Ms. Clark suggested a vanishing lunch fund raiser. Start with inviting 16 people for set amount for lunch. Those sixteen people have eight people for lunch and those eight people have four people for lunch. The board will consider it. The fountain for the garden was meant to mask the highway noise by the addition. There was discussion about having two fountains by the Art Center and interest in masking the highway noise. G. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 4:25 p.m.
