HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-07-25 Arts Culture Commission Minutes08/15/96 11:34 FAX 927 7645 CITY OF EDINA ART CENTER Z002/003 EDINA ART CENTER BOARD July 25, 1996 4:00 p.m. Edina Art Center MEMBERS PRESENT: Jim VanValkenburg, Gene Andersen, Sandy Clark, Art Dickey, Liz Eisenbrey, Heather Randall King, Art Dickey, George Kuebler, and Dee Dege MEMBERS ABSENT: Susan Kelm and Dodie Paul STAFF PRESENT: John Keprios, Diana Hedges and Solvei Swenson I. CALL TO ORDER Meeting was called to order by Chair Jim VanValkenburg. II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Heather King MOVED TO APPROVE MINUTES AS WRITTEN. Sandy Clark SECONDED, MINUTES APPROVED. III. STAR AND TRIBUNE REVIEW Mary Abbe a columnist for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, wrote an article that was unfavorable to the Edina Art Center. It compared it to the Walker, but it did not compare it to other community art centers. Pat Greer a former board member and resident of Edina wrote a letter to the editor in response. Ms. King inquired if the article would impact the funds which the Art Center receives from the city. Mr. Keprios stated, no, not at all. Ms. Eisenbrey stated that the article doesn't matter. The Edina Art Center is in a class by itself. Both Ms. King and Ms. Eisenbrey commented about a need for some interior improvements. Ms. King suggested new cupboard and counter tops in the kitchen and Ms. Eisenbrey suggested improved lighting and walls improved for hanging pictures. Ms. Hedges stated that some painting of the walls will be done and that the kitchen could be added to the list of improvements needed at the Art Center. Mr. Keprios suggested prioritizing the needs list. Ms. King inquired how much of the bond money could be used for cosmetics on the Art Center. Ms. Hedges stated there would be one third left from the bond fund for cosmetics. Ms. Hedges stated several artists have called to say that Mary Abbe is not respected in the art community. Ms. Clark asked if the article should be ignored. Several members stated it should be. IV. SPECIAL EVENTS AND GALLERY OPENINGS Ms. Hedges said thank you to Heather King for her help with hosting the student show, helping at the root beer stand and Street Scene host. The Street Scene had 100-150 guests. There was a great atmosphere during the show. 08/15/98 11:35 FAX 027 7845 CITY OF EDINA 444 ART CENTER Z003/003 V. VOLUNTEER Still need help with juried show opening Sept. 12, 5-8 p.m. George Kuebler is coordinating. Ms. King stated she would help. Contact Bradly Berm to help. The Garage Sale is August 21, 22, 23. Bring in stuff to be sold on August 19. Ms. Dege stated she will help. VI. DONATIONS Ms. Hedges expressed appreciation and thanks for the donations the Art Center has received. Golden K donated $350, Hershal Kitchen and John Dasburg have sent donations. Also Dennis Maetzold has donated. Thanks. VII. DICK WYATT'S RESIGNATION Mr. Wyatt has resigned from the Art Center Board due to health reasons. The board suggested Jerry Dalen or John Dasburg to fill the vacancy. Mr. VanValkenburg will share the suggestions with Mayor Richards. VIII. BUY CORN The Sever's corn stand is out at Lake Cornelia, Stop by and buy corn or other fruit/vegetables. The stand benefits the Art Center. IX. COMMUNITY CENTER The Community Center has asked the Edina Foundation for money to purchase a kiln. The board expressed concern in regard to the competition for classes. Both facilities receive taxes to assist in operations. As a result, there has always been an effort to avoid overlap. Board members expressed concern that the Community Center make an effort to work with the Art Center and not compete. Mr. Keprios suggested that board members attend the Community Services Board meeting or meet with Peggy Kelly to discuss the competition concern. X. OTHER Ms. King presented information in regard to the Art Center holding an event at the Minneapolis Club. The event would include a meal, a lecture and a tour of the club's art. The board was receptive to the event. Ms. Hedges presented a report on the Media Lab. The Media Lab has exceeded projected revenues by twice the expected amount. It has brought in 73 new members to the Art Center. XL ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
