November 30, 1995

MEMBERS ABSENT: Susan Kelm, Dee Dege and Dick Wyatt

I. CALL TO ORDER
Meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. by Chair, Jim VanValkenburg.
II. MINUTES
Ms. Paul made a correction to the October minutes. In the section labeled "OTHER" , the
fourth paragraph the word "Your" was corrected to "You're". Peter R. Spokes MOVED
TO APPROVE THE OCTOBER MINUTES AS CORRECTED. Sandy Clark
SECONDED. MOTION CARRIED.
III. FIRESIDE SUPPER RECAP AND FUNDRAISING
A. Fireside Supper
Ms. Hedges reported that the Fireside Supper was a great success. Thanks to Jim
and Sharon Hale for hosting the supper. Thanks to Gene Andersen for all of her
work on the auction . Thanks to the board members that donated or attended the
event. The total profit for the event was $3,349 compared with $2,730 from last
year.
B. Fundraising
Ms. King has contacted the manager at the Edina Theater in regard to booking an
opening/fundraiser event. She was directed to contact the management company
for the movies. The management company has guidelines they follow before they
rent to a group. Ms. Hedges has written a letter explaining the Art Centers'
function and the purpose of the fundraiser. If approved, the fundraiser would be
held on a Thursday night, one week after the original opening of the movie.
Everything is on hold until a response from the management company is received.
IV. HOLIDAY SALE AND TOAST TO BOB CONNOLLY
The Holiday Sale opened November 5 from 1-5 p.m. and will run through December 22.
Sales are ahead of last year. The new kiosk have made a difference.
The toast to Bob Connolly held at the Holiday Sale opening was very touching. There
were 50 plus people, including family members.
V. MEDIA LAB
The equipment from Hennepin County's media lab has been approved for purchase by the
Edina City Council. The $8,000 for the acquisition will come from cable money.
Mr. Keprios inquired about the December 13th Media Lab Committee meeting. Ms.
Hedges stated that people have volunteered to assist with the lab, set-up and instruction
on how to use the equipment. The committee is organizing to coordinate the volunteers,
publicity and fundraising.
Ms. Hedges stated that fees and charges will be worked out by Jim VanValkenburg and
herself before they are presented to the board. A member inquired about the need for
fundraising if the lab is anticipated to be self supporting. Ms. Hedges stated that the media
lab at the library was free so they are trying not to over price users fees. The fees may
include resident/non-resident rates and member/non-member rates.
VI. CROSSTOWN CAMERA CLUB
Mr. Dickey reported that the camera club has grown to 88 members. The group is quite
diversified. Members are young and old and from all walks of life. He encouraged board
members to stop in at a meeting.
The camera club will be hosting a juried show March 7, 1996 at the Art Center.
VII. GUIDELINES FOR BOARD MEMBERS
Ms. Hedges directed the board to their copy of the guidelines for board members. She
inquired if the board would like to have a committee look over the guidelines and update if
needed. Ms. Clark stated that the guidelines should be reviewed. Ms. King suggested
each member look at the guidelines and submit changes to Ms. Hedges. Ms. Hedges
stated the members should get the changes to her by January 11th.
VIII. HOLIDAY PARTY
Suzie Kelm is hosting the Holiday Party. Members are asked to bring a dish to share.
IX. OTHER
A. Board Article
Ms. Hedges directed the members to the copy of report from St. Thomas School
of Business regarding boards.
B. Hawaii Trip
The Art Center's seminar to Hawaii is full. A waiting list is being taken.
C. Suzie Kelm's opening is at Edinborough Park on Dec. 7 from 5-7pm.
D. Volunteer Opportunities
Ms. Hedges has several opportunities for volunteers to help. One opportunity is to
help with an office and instructors' handbook she is putting together. Ms. Paul
volunteered to help.
E. Lecture Series
Ms. King inquired if a lecture series has been done at the center. Ms. Hedges
stated they have tried and have not had much success, but would be willing to try
again. Ms. King suggested a Camera lecture series, held Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday.
X. BOND REFERENDUM PRESENTATION
Mr. Keprios presented a slide show in regard to the two Park Bond Referenda which will
be voted on May 7, 1996.
