VanValkenburg, Dee Dege
MEMBERS ABSENT: Susan Kelm and Don Peddie
STAFF PRESENT: Diana Hedges, Bob Kojetin and Solvei Swenson
Meeting called to order by Jim VanValkenburg at 7:31 a.m.
I. APPROVAL OF SEPTEMBER MINUTES
Heather King MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FROM THE SEPTEMBER 16, 1993
MEETING. Dodie Paul seconded. MOTION CARRIED.
II. JURIED SHOW
Heather King stated that the juried show lost two donors due to the
competition with the camera club/dark room. Liz Eisenbrey state that
some of the lack of donations was due to the fall-out from the
previous year.
Ms. King stated that the show received good publicity from the Edina
Sun Current and Katy Koch.
Ms. Paul stated that the selection percentage was low for the number
of art pieces submitted. She questioned if that was typical. Ms.
Hedges said it was. The judges had been encouraged to choose as many
pieces as they wanted, but still only selected a few.
Ms. Hedges suggested having a Judge's Choice room and a People's
Choice room. That way more pieces could be hung and the artist could
choose to hang their picture for the people's choice if it wasn't
picked for the Judge's room.
Another possibility would be to limit the entrants to the first 200
and then have a peer award.
Kathryn Bennett took care of setting up the food and hanging the art.
Members of the board stated that the show would not have been possible
without Ms. Bennett.
Ms. Anderson stated that the amount of food was more than adequate and
that much food was not needed. Ms. Clark commented that just drinks
for next year would be enough.
Jim VanValkenburg inquired whether the participants had made any
comments. Ms. Hedges stated that there wasn't a comment form
distributed. Mr. VanValkenburg suggested soliciting a response from
the participants.
Ms. Hedges stated that a larger committee for the Juried Show would be
beneficial. Also, a mission statement, indicating that this is not a
fundraiser first, but an artist's show.
The student show will still not be judged.
III. MAILING LIST
Ms. Hedges submitted a policy statement for the Edina Art Center's
mailing list:
"The Edina Art Center will not permit use of any mailing lists to any
outside organizations with the following exceptions:
a. The organization is working with the Art Center on a
activity. The Art Center will retain the list and will be
able to merge any additional names from the other
organization.
b. The Edina Foundation has full use of any Art Center list.
(The Foundation helped create and add data in 1989 during
Edinamite.)
We will suggest to any organization that has contacted the Edina Art
Center regarding a mailing list, that they advertise in our class
schedules. Reduced rates or trades available for any City
organization."
The board commented that the policy looks good.
Peter R. Spokes MOVED TO APPROVE THE MAILING LIST POLICY AS PRESENTED.
Sandy Clark Seconded. MOTION CARRIED.
IV. FIRESIDE SUPPERS
Invitations have been sent out. Several compliments have been
received on the invitations.
Six homes are participating in the suppers this year. Donations have
started to come in.
V. FUNDRAISING
Dee Dege asked if there has been an Edina art show for cultural
issues. Mr. VanValkenburg stated that Human Relations Committee has
an annual event. As a result, the Art Center has not organized an
event. Mr. Kojetin suggested that the Art Center could have an art
show at Edinborough to tie in with the Ethnic Festival.
Ms. King stated that Bloomington has a self-guided garden tour as a
fund raiser and suggested the Edina Art Center offer that next year.
Mr. Kojetin stated that the Edina Garden Council has a tour for their
fund raisers. This may create a conflict.
. OTHER
Peggy Kelly has offered her home, December 10th, for the
Christmas Party.
- Ms. Hedges thanked Ms. Eisenbrey and Ms. Dege for bringing groups
into the Art Center.
- Suzie Kelm's photographs are on display at the Library.
- Ms. Dege pointed out that the Edina Art Center is not listed
under Art in the "1st Call for Help" directory. It should be
cross referenced next year.
- Don Peddie has resigned due to surgery. Mr. VanValkenburg asked
for names of individuals for the board. Mr. Spokes stated Jim
Sullivan has contacted him with an interest to be on the board.
Sandy Clark suggested Dr. John or Pricilla Hill. Also, Kit and
Sue Arom were suggested. Ms. King suggested more information be
collected and discuss this further next week.
- Ms. King has donated the "Show Stoppers", for a 30 minute
performance. The art center can use it for a benefit.
Meeting adjourned 8:05 a.m.
