April at Edinborough Park. Dodie Paul was honored for her 16 years of service to the Art
Center.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Diana Hedges reported the following items:
Bill Dietrich Event: The Illusion Theater and the Art Center are co-sponsoring an event to
celebrate Bill's 80th birthday and more than 50 years of teaching Art in our community. His
work will be displayed at the Hennepin Center for the Arts, 528 Hennepin Avenue,
Minneapolis. The showing is titled "William Dietrichson Theatrical Images". A Champagne
Reception and special performance of the theater's "The Human Comedy" will take place on
Saturday, June 8ffi. Each Board Member received an information packet containing 5 event
brochures for distribution. Volunteers are needed to create a floral centerpiece and name tags.
Edina Art Fair: The new Executive Director for the 50ffi and France Business Association
visited the Art Center to introduce herself. Colleen Jones formerly worked with the
Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce. Her first major event is the Edina Art Fair, June 7-9ffi . The
Art Center will have the same space behind Tejas restaurant.
July 4th Parade: A coordinator/organizer is needed for the Art Center's participation in this
event.
Volunteer Luncheon: This annual event is scheduled for Friday, April 26ffi at Sandy Clark's
house. Thanks are due to Sandy for her hospitality again this year.
2
Grand Opening of Library and Senior Center: Thanks go to all those who helped to staff
the information tables on Sunday, April 14th. Linda Kieffer organized this effort, which gave
exposure to hundreds of people who attended the grand opening ceremonies/open house for the
new facilities at Grandview Square.
25th Anniversary Planning: The first organizational meeting of the committee to organize the
25th anniversary celebration will be convened at 5:00 pm, on April 26th. Ms. Hedges asked for
inputs from Board Members regarding their visions for the event. She stated that Mike Kelly
would prefer a late September or early October timeframe. After a short discussion, the
consensus was a recommendation for two events; one to be an evening for primarily adult
attendees and the other to be a weekend event focused on family participation. The
recommended dates are Friday, September 27th and Sunday, September 29th
Liz Eisenbrey suggested that a large tent would be a wise alternative in case of inclement
weather.
Sandy Clark suggested a pianist as entertainment and will donate the cost of the entertainment
for the family event. She will contact Eric Richardson.
It was suggested that a retrospective slide show could be created to run constantly in the
gallery. Dodie Paul will work with Phil Johnson to review the hundreds of photos and select
appropriate images to compose a video slide show.
John Keprios offered to make available grills, picnic tables and other appropriate equipment for
this event. The Park and Recreation people can also haul and setup some of this gear.
OTHER BUSINESS
Facilities Expansion: Mr. Keprios asked Ms. Hedges to review the meeting held with architect
Stefan Helgeson on April 23rd. This meeting, while preliminary in nature, did signal the revival
of discussions of expanding and improving art center facilities. The discussions at the meeting
ranged further than the previous ideas for additional pottery space. What is needed is an
evaluation of the entire site for consideration of long-term improvement and expansion that
will yield operating efficiencies as well as opportunities for increased business. The EAC staff
will work to put a master plan on paper for future review by the Board.
Stitchery/Needlework Event: Dee Dege distributed a flyer regarding a stitchery and
needlework event to be held Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5 at the Lennox Community
Center in St. Louis Park. This promises to be a first-class exhibition of beautiful art work.
ADJOURNMENT -The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 pm.
