The next meeting of the Juried Show Committee is Thursday, Aug. 2 at 4pm. The judges for the Juried Show are Kelly Connole and Jeff Hurinenko. Solicitation letters to prospective donors went out during the last two weeks of June. The response so far is encouraging. Personal notes from Board Members seem to have increased the response from several new donors and several donors increased their commitments. Another side benefit: After a visit and tour of the Art Center, employees of United Properties recommended that their firm donate $2,500 to support the mosaic tile project with Adama Sow and children from the community. This visit and grant were a direct result of Mike Kelly's personal note added to a Juried Show solicitation letter. Outreach and Public Art Committee - Diana Hedges Jim Van Valkenburg reported that the Edina City Council had amended the Art Center Board ordinance eliminating the requirement that the chair of the Public Art Committee be a member of the Art Center Board. Under the revised ordinance, the chair of the Art Center Board may appoint any person to serve as the committee chair. The current chair- woman of the Public Art Committee is Linda Kieffer whose term on the Art Center Board recently ended. Diana reported that Linda Kieffer had recommended Rick Fesler to be appointed to the Public Art Committee. Heather moved for this appointment, Gene seconded, the motion passed unanimously. Diana also reported that the Public Art Committee is serving an important role in planning for the proposed Promenade between the Galleria and Centennial Lakes. Another development: The new gymnasium building will have murals in several parts of the building. The outreach display area at Jerry's supermarket has a new show, also. Building Expansion Jim Van Valkenburg reported that an architectural firm had been chosen to do the feasibility study and initial design work for a proposed expansion to the Art Center. ATS&R Planners/Architects/Engineers was chosen after presentations to a committee by three firms. All the firms were very well prepared and gave competent presentations. TEAM MOON ! As part of our Creating Art Influenced by Books Workshops, a special luncheon author appearance by Catherine Thimmesh author of Team Moon on Friday, July 20 from noon-lpm. This event is free and open to the public. (Take a look at her book at the desk.) Would love to have some Board Members attend this special event. Catherine Thimmesh's visit to the Art Center coincides with the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing! (38th anniversary, if you are counting). Anne Spooner has been promoted to full-time status as Program and Gallery coordinator. US BANK We have established an outreach at the recently remodeled US Bank retirement planning area. The grand opening on August 2 will feature the art of Polly Norman, Edina resident and instructor at EAC. We tentatively plan to have 6-month rotating exhibits. If anyone would like to work on this committee and the Jerry's outreach committee, please call me right away. Thanks. Diana Hedges reported that Ken Rosland had formulated a design recommendation for the replacement sign. Several Board members expressed their desire to review the plan. George Hadjiyanis expressed a concern that the sign not be too industrial or sterile since it was representing an art center. John Keprios reminded that the sign must conform to provisions of a City ordinance. These provisions mainly concern size and placement so the sign can certainly be visually appealing. Public Comments No members of the community-at-large were present. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 4:50 pm.
