Public Art Edina Report
March 19, 2015
I. A new student member, Audrey Sheehy, a junior at Edina High School was welcomed to
our group.
II. ACTION ITEM - Nick Legeros presented to members and Parks & Recreation Director
Ann Kattreh, maquettes of his sculpture project. The project is a commission by John
Horn, an Edina resident and former president of Northwest Airlines to honor the late
Donald Nyrop, also an Edina resident and former Northwest Chair and CEO. The
sculpture project includes six life sized bronze figures of a young girl and boy, both flying
airplanes (to scale) as well as a family including a father, mother, boy and girl as they
exit what appears to be an airplane door frame. The base has a slight relief of the flight
patterns of former NWA routes on a map. The sculpture project must be presented to
the Edina Park Board for approval for the planned location at Centennial Lakes Park. It is
expected to be presented at the Park Board's April meeting. If approved, the girl and
boy sculptures playing with airplanes will be installed as soon as possible in the spring to
allow park foliage to grow naturally around them with the final grouping to be installed
in August at which time there would be a formal dedication. Public Art members, along
with Director Kattreh,
Deadline for the annual Call for Sculptures is April 6th. The call was sent out by Michael
Frey to over 265 artists, art groups, universities and clubs in the Midwest. Selection by
Pubic Art Edina and representatives of the 50th & France Business Association will be
made April 11th with de-installations of 11 sculptures in the first two weeks of May and
installations of 11 sculptures the last two weeks of May. Please mark your calendars for
our annual opening at Pinstripes Wednesday, June 17th, 5 to 7 p.m. Hearty hors
d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Postcard invitations will be sent in May.
IV. ACTION ITEM - Member La Valleur gave a report about the Edina Federated Women's
Club donation of $5,000 which will be made in May. After discussions with the club, it
was suggested that a life-sized K-9 sculpture be funded with the hopes of having it
installed in front of City Hall and the Edina Police Department (between the steps and
the handicapped ramp). Public Art requests the Commission make a motion to endorse
this project so that it may be brought to the City Council for a vote as soon as possible.
While complete funding is not yet finalized, there is a good chance that it will not be
difficult to secure additional funding given the popularity of K-9 officers.
V. Amanda Janzen, Project Manager of Shafer Richardson, has expressed interest in being a
part of the rotating sculpture exhibit in conversations with Michael Frey. She said that
her company, which is building the multistoried apartment complex behind Byerly's
overlooking The Promenade, are interested in having a pod for sculptures on their
property. Michael Frey will ask the city attorney about the legalities of that partnership
and get back to us.
VI. The group discussed having Michael Frey send out a call for Edina artists of all ages to
apply to be the next artist whose work will be used for a utility box wrap. The location is
50th & Wooddale. A $200 stipend will be given to encourage artists to enter
photographs, paintings or graphic designs. It is intended that the wrap be installed this
year.

Grandview Update from February 2015
March 19, 2015
Former Public Works Site — Update on Exploration Phase
The City continues to collect ideas and suggestions for public and private facilities to consider at this
vacant site behind Jerry's Foods and across from Our Lady of Grace Church. The City is working in
partnership with Frauenshuh, Inc. to prepare development scenarios that include complementary public
and private components — similar to Edinborough Park or Centennial Lakes, but on a smaller scale. The
general idea being that revenue raised at the 'private' component could help pay for the new 'public'
component.
An update was presented to City Council on Feb. 3, 2015. Based on the suggestions and comments
collected to date, there appears to be shared interest in four types of community facilities on a portion
of the site:
El New Community Recreation Center
i New Community Arts & Culture Center
New Community Performing Arts Center
New Multi-Purpose Community Center (welcoming to all ages with indoor & outdoor space)
Residents have also expressed interest in more restaurants and more housing options on a portion of
the site. In addition to these shared themes, some residents have also expressed concern with the
expense of a new community facility while others suggest that the site be retained for future public use.
The design team will continue to collect input from community members for the next several weeks.
If you and your neighbors have ideas to share or questions to ask, please contact Heather Branigin at
952-826-0403 or hbranigin@EdinaMN.gov to schedule an Exploration Session. Sessions can be
customized to be as brief as 15-minutes or up to 1-hour in length depending on the time available.
Daytime and evening hours are available. Alternatively, feel free to be part of the online conversation
occurring at www.SpeakUpEdina.org.
All comments and suggestions will be considered as the design team prepares initial concepts to discuss
at the next public Discovery Session.
