Other activities included a traffic signal from the electrical/signal department so kids could safely cross the “street,” and flower planting with the Park Maintenance Department. Visitors also got an up close look at the tools used by street maintenance and equipment operator crews. “We wanted to let the community see who we are and what we do,” said Public Works Coordinator Steve Johnson. About 42 Public Works employees were on hand at the event to answer questions, help children into vehicles and serve hot dogs. Kids received pencils, bags, coloring books, brochures, toy hard hats and door prizes. They could also have their picture taken on one of the “Big Trucks” to take home. The Public Works open house was a part of National Public Works Week. Departments participating included: Street Maintenance, Electrical, Traffic Control, Utility, Sewer & Water, Heavy Equipment, Park Maintenance, and Equipment Maintenance.
