Future cheerleaders rouse parade spirit
Edina, Minn., July 7, 2004 – With pompoms and flair, the Future Edina Cheerleaders clinched first-place
among the entries in Edina’s Independence Day parade Sunday, July 4.
The cheerleaders showed up in large numbers, shaking pompoms and reciting cheers. Assistant City Manager Eric
Anderson, one of the contest judges, said Future Edina Cheerleaders was unquestionably his first choice because
they showed so much spirit.
Edina Girl Scouts and the Edina Swim Club took second and third place, respectively. The Girl Scouts rode through
the parade in a boat , and the Swim Club made an impression on the judges with a multiple-person dragon costume.
The two other judges for the competition were Director of Community Education Services Doug Johnson and his
daughter Joanna Johnson, a 2003 Edina High School graduate. The judges looked for entries and participants who
showed the most patriotism, dressed festively and represented Edina’s youth.
“ We’re really trying to connect with the young people,” said Anderson. He added that awarding youth for their
patriotism and involvement in the parade helps them develop a sense of pride for their country and Edina.
Judging the parade entries has been done since 2000 when the Fourth of July Parade Planning Committee decided

Staff Liaison to the Parade Planning Committee, said entries with floats, costumes and red, white, and blue are most
likely to win awards.
The Edina Playground Program and Edina Soccer Association entries also received Honorable Mention from the
judges. The Playground Program’s float and the vast number of soccer players added to the parade splendor. The
juggling skills of Jugheads won parade awards in the past, and made another impression on the judges
this year.
