The ordinance, which states that residents may water on odd or even-numbered dates depending on the last digit of their address, was put into effect in 1981 to conserve water during dry summer months. It is in effect from May 1 until Sept. 1 each year. Small amounts of rain this summer have caused the City’s aquifers to lower 30 to 40 feet, said City of Edina Utility Superintendent Roger Glanzer. The inability of wells to meet residents’ demands in times of high usage jeopardizes the city’s ability to fight serious fires should they occur. The City’s next step, should it be needed, is to issue a complete ban on sprinkling. Residents can help to avoid this by following Edina’s policy and sprinkling tips:  Water only in the early morning or evening. The mid-day heat and sun evaporates most water before it has a chance to soak in.  Don’t allow water to run down into the driveway or street.  Most grasses, shrubs and trees require one inch of water per week. Pay attention to how much rain they receive to determine whether or not they need additional water.
