HomeMy WebLinkAboutCouncil_Connection_010411Council discusses boards, commissions At a work session prior to its regular meeting, the Council began discussing its relation- ship with advisory boards and commissions. Applicants for boards and commissions will be inter- viewed by the Council this week and next. Appointments will be made in February. The Council decided to meet with the chairs of the boards and commissions early in the year to share its goals and vision for the year so the groups can work more col- laboratively. The Council also agreed to review the attendance policy for boards and commissions. In addition, the Council will consider eliminating dual memberships where a mem- ber of one board or commis- sion serves as a representa- tive on a second board or commission. Additional changes to the City Code might be considered to model the board and commission ordinance after that in Bloom- ington. Bennett, Sprague take oath of office Surrounded by their col- leagues and family members, Joni Bennett and Josh Spra- gue took the oath of office as Council Members at the top of the City Council meeting. Bennett and Sprague were the top vote-getters in the Nov. 2 General Election. In the race for two City Council seats, Bennett, an incumbent, was the top voter-getter with 10,419 votes. Bennett was first elected to the Council in 2006 after serving on the Transportation Commission. Sprague, who was a member of the Transportation Commis- sion, received 7,889 votes. He succeeds Scot Housh, who did not seek reelection after hav- ing been a member of the City Council since 2001. Council names new Mayor Pro Tem Ann Swenson was appointed Mayor Pro Tem. The Mayor Pro Tem fulfills the duties of the Mayor in his absence. Former Council Member Scot Housh had served as Mayor Pro Tem since 2005. Since Swenson is the longest- tenured member of the Coun- cil, Mayor Jim Hovland sug- gested she be named Mayor Pro Tem.
